OU?

The ESPN no. 1 recruit who plays in Lubbock just chose to go to OU. Wow! She spurned SC, LSU and Texas. I am totally shocked. Closer to home for sure, but, given the fact that OU doesn't have deep pockets, I missed this call. Someone in Norman switched from football NIL to Wbb? The results seem to say so with declining football and rising women's bball.

Seems like it was all about money for Chavez, I'm sure OU got enough to be the highest bidder

Rumors that she was asking 1.5 million and got laughed off by several schools. UCLA, SC, LSU to name a few.

Will be interesting to know how much she finally got. I remember a buddy trying to sell a motorcycle for $12,000. About a year went by with no takers and finally a guy said, "Well that's what you're asking but what would you take?" He pondered a minute and said, "If you're serious I'll take $6,000." Bike sold.

Also I wonder about the rumors that Gerlich got a renewal because she was bringing in Chavez, I read that several places. If there was any truth to that you'd have to wonder how TT feels now. They were one of several Big 12 teams that sure needed to change captains.

Chavez did not spurn LSU and SC. She and her father were demanding $1.3 million NIL last year before she even arrives on campus. Front runners were LSU and TX. But Kim didn't like her demands and didn't want to be part of a bidding war so Kim withdrew the scholarship offer. Same with Dawn Staley at SC. Then Chavez NIL demand went up to $1.5 million between OK and TX. She also demanded to play the game the way she wants to play it.

This is ridiculous.

NIL is way out of control.

Who does she think she is - Sheryl Swoopes?!

If she wants a fast paced offense, with a high turnover rate, coupled with minimal defensive effort, she probably went to the right school, Oklahoma. Coaches like Dawn, Kim and Vic would be on her rear end, How are the other players going to react? Will there be a question of team chemistry with the Freshman self proclaimed GOAT?

I could be off here. But Chavez feels like a team cancer in the making. She reeks of a ME ME player. Won't be surprised if this blows up in OUs face

Hopefully this NIL crap blows up in a lot of people's faces before it blows up college athletics completely. Probably a pipe dream though.

BU has seen it first hand with Roach. No disrespect to Jeremy but he wasn't worth near what we paid.
There has to be some sort of cap or college sports will be permanently ruined.

IowaBear & blackie…. As a lawyer, a cap would just just present a lawsuit the NCAA and the schools would not win. That's almost as silly as to believe our Athletic Director that there's a level playing field coming. The big state schools along with USC and other wealthy privates will always have an advantage.

Oh, you are spot on..... This girl better buckle up - Dawn, Kim and Vic will most definitely have something "special" in store for her when she arrives on campus for a game. Pencil those games on the calendar and make sure you are watching,....

Yes…HAS to be a cap. Gotta get the horse back in the barn as to NIL. I'm sure the brain trust at the NCAA are on it.

Anything presents a lawsuit.

The NCAA is sliding away, soon the Big 10 and the SEC will control most of the large TV rights and leave the NCAA and form there own Athletic Conferences, referred to as Big Money.
IowaBear
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah this where it's headed. By 2030 I think they'll only be around 40 D1 teams in a super conference spear headed by the SEC/B10. The greed is killing college athletics. And unfortunately the greed of Stanley and whoever the B10 commish is will ultimately kill off the current set up

I am certainly not knowledgeable on the subject of the legalities. But if the professional leagues have a cap what are the factors associated with each as to why the colleges cannot have a cap. Is it due to the "student" athletes not being treated as employees or something along those lines? You would think that anyone with half a brain can figure out that the current trend for universities is not sustainable and still have any semblance whatsoever of "student" athletics and any type of a level playing field as to however you define that.

Any break between the "haves" and the "have nots" may very well be initiated by the "have nots" versus the top initiating a break-up as the "have nots" will be eventually and effectively excluded from the ability to compete for national championships (or even get close) because they just cannot afford to buy championship quality athletes, and their budgets and their on-field performances, even at the best of their ability, will tell them the "jig is up", and that it would be continuing to be throwing money away to try to think they can compete.

Local rumors here in Lubbock say it is Daddy driving the bus. He also wanted a house in whatever town so they could live nearby.

We have not agreed some in the past but you are spot on with this post. I would not be surprised one or two hurt feelings on the currant OK team opt for the portal.

Not.

Chavez will not be a good team player without totally reframing her game. She will take a shot covered by three players rather than pass ball to a wide open teammate.

One could take the million plus that OU likely spent on her and purchase an entire team!

With NIL/free agency, you can buy your team now. Theoretically, a donor could decide they want a final 4 team, pony up the $$$, and bingo, podunk univ is a WBB power for a year…or as long as the $$$ lasts.
OU may rue the day…ridiculous.

After OU got thumped by UConn tonight, Chavez might tell them to pay her $2M.

She is a great shooter, but I bet she will be abused on defense. OU's offense is perfect for her as said above. I think she will also find it a lot harder to score in college although we know OUs high flying offense will be tailor-made for her.

Someone asked why can't college sports have a salary cap the same as most US major sports leagues. I believe that the answer is that each players group formed a union, which can bargain with the owners and agree to a cap if they wish. The reason why the players' union makes that possible is that otherwise a salary cap would be an antitrust violation.

I'm certainly not an expert on this, but I think I'm correct.

One other note: Pro sports teams are vociferous in assuring that teams don't violate the cap, but doing so in college sports would, I suspect, be much harder due to the boosters. There's not much risk that a wealthy person outside of the ownership structure of a pro sports team is going to spend major dollars paying an athlete to play for the pro team the wealthy person loves, but that risk absolutely exists in college sports - because boosters derive self worth through how well their college performs in sports - so weird.

well, call me a wizard.

Basketball requires teamwork and everything i have seen and heard of her and her family, she sounds like she is not interested in being a team player. It should tell you something if both dawn and kim said no.

think what you want, but based on her demands and her parents NIL demands, do you truly think that she would be a successful team player? she's obviously not interested in career growth, she is only interested in the short term NIL money. Give me one example of any collegiate athlete who demands a certain amount of money that has produced a successful career?

Read my first post about Chavez. My thoughts are rather clear. I'm sure there's many players who've made those demands and been great players. Chavez is a terrific talent. It remains to be seen if she's able to reign in the me me act in college. If she does.. she's going to be incredible. If not than well CANCER
