Is it too early for starting lineup predictions?

Jana, 2 ella, 3 ines
Taliah, 2 yuting
Bella, 2 marcayla
Buggs, 2 Kiera
Kierston johnson, 2 Kyla, 3 kayla

This was so hard to put players into certain positions because we have so much versatility on thus roster, i know coach nicki is have fun with this team.

Now if Jana's not where she needs to be before the season starts.
Taliah
Marcayla
Bella
Buggs
Kierston johnson /2 kyla

This team truly fits Nicki's version of a positionless team,

I can live with your two sceneries - I will add first TWO off the bench will be Yuting and Pemberton
The remaining substitutions (and possibly starting decisions) will be game driven such as foul situations, exploiting individual mismatches and defensive mismatches countering moves.

Of course, a lot depends on EVERYONE staying healthy..... Kayla having her anticipated breakout sophomore season (she does seem much more engaged right now then I remember her being last summer) and I say it again by Conference time Marcayla is going to make it so Nicki has to find her some more minutes and the same with Yuting !!

The one dependable lineup characteristic to take to the bank……

after multiple seasons of teams packing the paint & throwing four defenders at ballside action (because Baylor lacked enough dependable 3 point shooting), expect no less than three of the following on the court at most times:

Scott
Goryanova
Brow
Van Gytenbeek
Deng
Pemberton
Fontleroy

after coaching a team playing inside a phone booth since arriving at Baylor, CNC has to be excited.

With the caveat that I have not seen the newcomers play in person, I would add the following comments:

  • Based on comments CNC made in an interview with Ashley several weeks ago, I would anticipate that both Jana and Inez will be brought along slowly. I would not expect Jana to start, at least in the fall.
  • Yuting impressed me both on the film I saw, and that she worked herself into the starting lineup at Auburn as a freshman who joined mid-season. As of now, I am expecting her to be a starter.
  • As a true freshman who has not faced D1 competition yet, I expect Macayla to come off the bench, at least at the beginning of the year. I'm also a fan of letting true freshmen earn a starting position on the court in real games. Don't just gift it to them at the beginning of the year.
  • I do think Pemberton will be valuable off the bench as you have stated, but at least for me, she has to prove it against D1 competition. I think she will get there, it just may take her some time to adjust to the level of competition.
  • If Jana stays healthy, I think CNC may have to expand from her recent experience and consider a 9 player rotation come January. A nice problem to have.

Pemberton was first team All Conference in the Summit League last year.
Two time All Summit league in two years.
She scored 16.7 PPG on 53% shooting and averaged 7.2 RPG.

Explain how that production in a reasonably good D1 conference fails to "prove it"?

I am not as smart as you and I recognize that. Maybe "D1" was too broad of a term, but from my amateur perspective, I do not think the competition Pemberton faced in the Summit League last year was the same that she will face in Big12 play and the stronger non-conference games on Baylor's schedule. I liked the 20 minutes or so of highlights that I watched on Pemberton. In my ignorance, I will admit to have never having watched a complete game of two teams in the Summit League, and could not even name a single team in their league. (I"m sure I've heard of the schools, I could just not say what schools are in that league). I think the two transfers from Auburn faced tougher competition, at least overall, especially for Yuting since her only games were in SEC play.

In 2022, a Summit League team played Baylor WBB in the NCAAT (in Waco at Ferrell) and beat us by 14 points. Baylor had Smith & Egbo who were WNBA first round draft choices.

The top half of the Summit are very good teams.

I agree that (3) 3 ball shooters as a very likely lineup 95.0% of the time and would not be surprised if (4) 3 ball shooters were on the floor at the same time really stretching out defenses and opening up the floor for multiple offensive options.
Deng and Pemberton have Caitlin Clark 3 ball range and also have that quick first step to blow by for a rim attack as does Scott. With the team speed this team has at every position I look for fast break opportunities to become a significant % of the offensive threat this season. DLB, Bella and Kierston are more than capable rebounders and outlet passers to flyers Scott, Deng, Pemberton and Brow (Jana).
It's gonna be a fun team to watch !!

Expecting a ton of situational rosters.

End of quarter D, end of quarter O, press D, press breaking O, big, small, zone breaking, side out of bounds against pressure, inbounds denial, etc.

Yes.....Nicki's pregame and post game pressers are going to be an educational must see for fans on all the terminology, in game situational substitutions and player rotations !!!

Jana has supposedly been ahead of schedule on her rehab and is reportedly moving well and regaining confidence in her knee. I initially expected her to come off bench but if she continues to step up in practice, I would not be surprised to see her playing starters minutes if she can be good enough on D. I think Deng may be one of our best players and I think she will finish close games and earn starters minutes early. I am interested to see how Kiera is worked in and what kind of rebounding-defensive pressure- rim protection we can get from Kiera, Kyla, Kiersten and Marcayla. I think we have the chance to be a suffocating defensive team with ball pressure all over the arc and improved rim protection and rebounding.
