Need to adapt……

Without question, UConn is the measuring stick in WBB.
They have the most championships (not really close).
They have adapted the best over the years.
They have the best balance between skill and athleticism on their roster.
They constantly land top recruits. They move on from top recruits that don't pan out.

South Carolina and UT spend huge money and get some results.
But it is UConn that Baylor should emulate.

1) get ahead of the curve offensively.
UConn was among the first WBB teams to implement the triangle offense. In year 1 they won their first NC and followed it with multiple championships. As other programs figured out how to defend it, UConn adapted to a modified and inverted Princeton offense. They won multiple championships. Other teams figured out how to defend it. UConn now runs an Action to Action motion offense. They won a NC last year and are the heavy favorite to repeat.

Baylor needs to dump the 2020 high ball screen offense (which teams know how to defend) and get on the leading edge of Action to Action.

2) get more shooting.
No offense without sufficient outside shooting succeeds. Scoring in packed paint is hard. Outside shooting makes any offense workable but makes top offenses zing. Baylor had the best post player of the last 30 years but only managed one NC because we lacked sufficient shooting.

3) get speed, size and athleticism at the point.
Small and slow at PG is a Death sentence. Death on O. Death on D.

4) once done getting more shooting, get more shooting.
No offense succeeds when four defenders are covering three offensive players ballside and one defender is zoning up the backside because there isn't enough shooting. Frontside spacing doesn't work without frontside shooting. Screening doesn't work if defenders can always go under due to a lack of shooting. Drop coverage is a killer when shooting is lacking.

5) basic fundamentals.
When we have three turnovers in one game inbounding the ball, that is bad basketball. Constantly picking up the dribble in stupid locations leading to turnovers is bad basketball. Sloppy one handed passes leading to turnovers is bad basketball. Ball handling and passing are developed skills. There is never a reason to lack in those areas.

6) conditioning.
We had three core rotation players and one extended rotation player who basically gassed out after 3-4 minutes of playing time. Any player should be able to roll six minutes of clock.

7) size.
We can't start every game with a foot deficit in starting lineup height.

8) intensity.
Showing up for games after the first quarter has ended is utter nonsense.

9) stop with the constant sidelines play call.
No team can play fast when the coach is always calling plays from the sideline.

10) play fast.

Starting half court offense when the shot clock is at 15 or 16 is mindboggling. Watch how fast UConn gets into half court O.

Excellent write up. I would love to see the program get built this way. UCONN is certainly the measuring stick in the sport.

All those points make a lot of sense. I believe the coaching staff will be looking hard for an excellent PG and back up options that can pass, hopefully reducing our turnovers by not having Taliah forced into playing the point. Multiple scoring options that can spread the floor and an overall better passing team will help a lot. Still need post play scoring threat, rebounder and rim protector. I do not know much about the transfer from NC State who joined the team mid-term as to her strengths.

Lot of the NIL dollars BU spent this last year will be graduating and CNC has had some effort in the fundraising area. Will see what happens in the overall market price point wise - football went up a lot - WBB may not have near the same escalation except perhaps at the top 10 schools or so who way outspend everyone else. Hopefully, the NIL will be compete for some top transfer talent.

Need a coach willing to adapt. Not convinced CNC is willing to look in the mirror and see what changes need to be made.

Does BU leadership outside the new AD have the business acumen and courage to risk making the changes and investments required to build a program modeled after UConn?

My answer to that would be a resounding NO! Untill I see fruits to prove otherwise.

BU leadership just cut the funding of the university fairly significantly, including the retirement contributions for faculty and staff. It may not be acumen or courage that'$ needed.

The measuring stick may be how UConn handles things when Geno retires or is unexpectantly no longer there. No other program that lost its HOF coach figured it out without a steep drop from where they had been living. If they can manage the handoff without a drop to the bottom of the top 25, they will be the first.

I would bet they hire Shea Ralph back from Vanderbilt where she has done a terrific job and UConn may never miss a beat.

I agree that Shea would be excellent hire and do well but she is nowhere close to Geno level.

That hire would likely start a UConn civil war as both Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird have been publicly campaigning to be the replacement for the past decade.

CNC is an excellent analyst, especially after the fact and after the game. She can describe what happened in vivid detail. But…she is not effective at putting a plan on the floor, and getting the players ready for what they will face. And she often seems bewildered at knowing what to do in-game, and seems at times to go mentally AWOLleaving the immediate coaching to her assistants. As the season progressed it was obvious that the team was not prepared to play the better teams, especially those that were game-planned and schemed to disrupt the Bears on offense. The lack of an excellent point guard was especially glaring in those games, and against Duke that is where the team quickly became dismantled and never recovered. Again, CNC's strength is as an analyst (along with other strengths such as building personal cohesion among teammates- they love her and she them-and this team played with increased intensity in most games…). But, her teams have not improved, especially in the last couple of years, and were not close to being competitive against elite competition. It was merciful that we did not have to play LSU. That may have ended CNC's time at Baylor.

Actually I think they have improved from the year after Mulkey's seniors graduated. That first year was half a roster that won but there was nothing behind the curtain for the future because we were left with no underclass distribution or numbers.

I think each year the team improved over the season until this year. I think we were better the first half than the last half, perhaps fatigue from JVG and Scott as they had to take on the bulk of the minutes I do think last year's team was better because we had real point guards and Vonleh in the middle. We had nothing this year to compare with Vonleh that could really be a post presence at her level on both ends of the court. And I think that was a significant factor, not to be discounted.

I have wondered if we also held ourselves back in this past year's portal additions because of a feeling of loyalty to DLB, Bella and JVG, especially JVG, hoping that Scott could make the difference. From a people perspective that is noble. From an objective roster, it is not, but I can see why that might have been the case.

We now have a much cleaner state to work with. It will be interesting to see how it shakes out. But when half or more of your starters rotate in and out each year (true now of many teams except the truly elite), you are going to have ups and downs depending on how well you do in the portal. This year was definitely not as good as in recent years.
