I think this lineup will struggle offensively. So prob have to swap out one of Skylar/Reese/Kyla to have more balance. Tho having bad offensively lineup hasn't stopped us before...

Skylar is a great player and has always been what makes you think shes isnt gonna be good offensively, same for reese she a good player who will most likely start.

I went with kyla over awou bc this is her fifth year in the system and she will be in better shape too start the season.

Tianna can start as a wing as well but her game would need to grow alot too not just be a catch and shoot player. I know she has worked more recently on expanding on her game, so it really depends on whos ready.

I do not see Kayla starting this year but I can definitely see her getting a lot of minutes. She has lost a lot of weight and totally transformed her body. She seems very engaged and Nicki has said several times that she has a lot of talent. I hope it is a "break out" year for her.

I don't think Kyla is the best option at 5. If anything, it should be a rotation like it was with Kyla and KJ, but with Lorena starting.

PG- Trinity
SG- Taliah
SF- Skylar
PF- Reese
C- Lorena

Bench:
PG- Ella/ Nez
SG- Tianna/ Marcayla (Recovery)
SF- Tianna (Flex upward)
PF- Kayla
C- Kyla

I think the lineup adjustments with Koval arriving will be along the lines of:

Starters:
C Kate Koval
PF Kyla Abraham (Reese Ross, prior to Koval joining)
SF Reese Ross (Skylar Jones, prior to Koval joining)
SG Taliah Scott
PG Trinity Turner

Reserves:
C Lorena Awou (Starting C, prior to Koval joining)
PF Kayla Nelms
SF Skylar Jones
SG Tianna Thompson and Marcayla Johnson
PG Ella Brow and Ines Goryanova

think it will be Trinity, Tianna, Skylar, Koval Awou with Taliah as our instant offense off the bench and Kyla rotating off bench for Awou and Kayla and Reese rotating at 4 situationally. Marcayla subbing for Skylar when well!

Just kidding…

I actually think it will be Trinity, Taliah, Tianna, Koval (at least when comfortable in offense)) and Awou as starters most games. Tianna and Trinity got our most favorable offseason reports and Tianna is a better 3 or shooter than Skylar or Ross giving us 3-4 acceptable 3 pt shooters on floor at once. That will help spacing alot. I'm guessing 1in 4 out will be our base O. I think lineups will change considerably at 3-4 depending on the opponent.

Nicki has a lot of depth this year. I can also see her using some different line ups based on opponent.

This is her most talented roster since shes been here from top to bottom in my opinion. All the other ls have either not been talented enough or didnt have the depth, i think she has both with this team.

Rambling thoughts:

1) don't think the staff knows the starting lineup at this point. Ideas, yes. Finished decision, no.

2) the staff is faced with modifying some D schemes with the addition of a jumbo sized 4. Koval's height and length will allow her to play a full step off of her player on the backside perimeter (think Lauren Cox) and thus be closer to delivering backside help. Also, Koval can play behind her player in the post. Buggs/Fontleroy/Nelms all had to 3/4 their player in the post.

3) until we see in game conditions whether Goryanova or Brow have elevated their games to a solid PG backup, the need to use Scott at the 1 for ten minutes a game remains unknown. That need impacts minute distribution at the two and three.
It also impacts whether Ross sees minutes at the three.

4) until a player shows that they have elevated their games, expect the core rotation to include: Scott, Jones, Awou, Abraham, Ross, Koval, Thompson and Turner. Add Johnson once she is fully recovered. Not including Nelms until she proves that she isn't lost on half her D rotations. Even then not sure she plays much.

5) the height of the core rotation is huge compared to years past.

6) three point shooting may be an issue. But size might create extra O possessions and decrease opponents possessions. Both O and D rebounding should improve tremendously.

7) We will not run as much. We likely won't have to run that much.

8) reasonably expect this team to be the top D team in B12. Hopefully one of top 4 teams offensively.

9) Historically team has mixed d on ball screens with ice, hard hedge, soft hedge, and drop coverage. Expect more icing than ever due to size at the 4 and 5. Trying to pass over those players will be tough.

10) with depth, not only expecting more rotations but also expecting shorter runs. Quite a bit of four minute runs and nothing over six minutes. D energy should increase and cheap fouls should plummet.

11) expecting Scott's usage to drop by 5-6 mpg. Scott's Late February swoon should disappear.

12) Expect a ton of high low and side to side screening from post players.

13) the cross the lane diagonal entry pass that Mulkey loved should reappear.

14) Horn Set with these players will be interesting. Barcelona, Spartan, etc. will be effective since WBB sees Horn actions so rarely.

15) Koval as the entry point on press breaking will be interesting.

16) with this many new players, D install will be continuing into early February. Full O install might be completed after season ends.

17) hoping the annual "first time we see Zone D" meltdown skips this year.

18) getting Johnson fully back(and healthy) by early February might prove to be a big determining factor for a March run.

19) again, we jump from one of the smallest B12 teams to one of the tallest.

20) do we have enough talent and effort to win until the installs are complete and players fully understand the O and D rotations? Maybe.

21) FT percentage may increase and that item is huge.

22) this team is so much taller.

23) will we incorporate zone D as a change up?

24) we will shoot 125+ more FTs than our opponents.

25) average attendance will jump by 1400 people.

Has the staff said anything about their expectations for Marcayla?

The Baylor fan base is starved for Championship Hope in major sports.

If Aranda is fired (highly likely), replaced by someone with energy (nowhere to go but up), and MBB and WBB start the season strongly, the fan base will rally hard and attendance and energy will spike. Sadly, Baylor has been seriously in the doldrums since 2022. Almost half a decade of "down" primes the pump for an energetic rise.

As an aside, think this year's team will be very physical, it will lead to on court altercations with opponents, and bad blood will energize the fan base. Nothing quite like knuckle throwing and hair pulling to get a WBB fan base yelling loudly and buying tickets to see some solid WWE nastiness.

I don't want to put pressure on Kate Koval starting right away. She needs to learn the plays on offense and adjust to the style of offense. Defense might have some different terminology and style, but she should be fine to adjust on defense. I do think that once Kate gets adjusted she can start for the team. Luckily there are easier games prior to the USC game though I'm not overlooking Fairleigh Dickinson because Fairleigh Dickinson pushed Iowa at Iowa in ncaa tournament. Granted I know they lost some production either due to transfer portal or graduation.

Personally, I could gave a **** about pressuring her to start. She was the #1 rank post of her class and an All-American. You dont come from two premier programs to come to baylor and be 3rd off the bench. Forget feeling.. we havent one a big 12 championship since nicki first year. Nicki brought her here to WIN. She might not start at the beginning of the season but I bet you does before the start of conference.

More thoughts:

1) who starts a game is massively overrated. Bigger items are minute distribution and which players finish tight games.

2) Other than OOB, Baylor WBB doesn't run plays. Mulkey does. Collen runs actions with reads and responses. That distinction is not merely semantics but a fundamental difference. Plays are predetermined five player motions (with 2-3 options) where the shooting spots and options are predetermined. It is great for regular season where teams have little scouting time because it focuses on getting your best players their favorite shots. But it bogs down badly in post season when facing good teams with time to scout. At that point the opponent takes away the top two options on every play. It is also notoriously slow with an inability to reach a third play on a shot clock. Collen runs actions which rely on players to read the D and respond. Dribble attack or pass. Screen or slip. Curl or flare. Bounce or dive. And when done correctly (see UConn or Florida MBB) it runs fast on A2A with the D being totally broken down by 3rd action and giving up easy buckets.

3) Koval's biggest learning curve is on D. Our O isn't overly unique. The biggest items are timing and reads. Our Zone O is also fairly basic for the posts. But on D we do a wide variety of help (especially on ball screen action). Learning proper spacing and help on ice, hard hedge, soft hedge, and drop from a myriad of spots on the floor is hugely time consuming. LSU goes over every screen, never switches. Learning LSU D is very straightforward. Baylor D is on opposite end and reasonably complex.

4) Koval will be integrated at a steady pace but not a breakneck pace. But her size might dictate minutes even when her systemic knowledge doesn't.

5) It is easier to move from a European motion offense to a US action offense than vice versa. Koval's experience in Ukraine and Notre Dame will speed the process. The LSU experience doesn't really translate. That is why historically Baylor players had difficulty transitioning to the pros. Plays on O and no switch on D has limited applicability.

6) for the first time in CNC era, which players fit best in tandem becomes a big factor in rotations. For past few years only having 6-7 viable options made rotation decisions easy. This year looks different. Will be VERY interesting to see which players mesh as units. Especially considering how different Koval is from Ross, Scott from Johnson, etc.

Right, and this was somewhat my initial starting lineup projection before Kate Koval joining. I had Lorena starting at C and Kyla coming off the bench. No way Kate doesn't start here, which I think will be at C, but I can see CNC starting Kyla at PF since she's a Sr and moving Reese down to SF because having three Cs in Kate, Kyla, and Lorena would starve someone out on minutes (likely Kyla as the less overall talented of the three). So, I see it as:

C Kate
PF Kyla
SF Reese
SG Taliah
PG Trinity

C Lorena
PF Kayla
SF Skylar
SG Tianna and Marcayla
PG Ella and Ines
