So, my two questions are

1. How in the heck did we get here?

2. Can we be competitive again in the next few years?

Definitely. It's Mitch's job to recruit. He has in the past. I'm
Sure there will be attrition this off-season as he reloads. I'd expect some JUco power hitters at multiple
Positions plus some guys who can hit for average steal some bases. A catcher who can do all aspects. Throw, hit for average amd power. Next year will be better. The question is now : who stays that is pretty good that wants to help
Rebuild. Instead of leaving for greener pastures

1. Look at the slow erosion of talent and results the further away from Smitty you get. He'd clearly lost his edge at the end of his career, but he could always field competitive teams. Rodriguez coasted on that foundation for a few years before his utter lack of recruiting and program-building became evident on the south side of COVID. Then once Rod left, what talent he did have fled for the hills and Mitch was left with a few spare batteries in the junk drawer.

2. Competitive? Yes. Consistently competitive? No. Smitty had a similar rebuild on his hands in the mid-90's and it took him four years to even reach a regional. I think this one is even more stark than that one, and based on how bad the program is now I wouldn't expect much before then.

Mitch has tried his best to patch it together with late transfers, MCC guys and a patchwork freshman class, but it is what it is. Unless he's the baseball version of Nick Saban on the recruiting trail and we start pulling guys away from LSU and Texas, we have a lot of terrible baseball ahead of us before things get better.

There are a few true freshmen and first year players to build on, but will they stay? Pitching is not good so far and there's seemingly a lot of experience there. That being said, Big 12 seems down this year. Who knows.
