Baylor Baseball blown out by No. 16 Texas Tech in Series Opener, 10-1
LUBBOCK, Texas – Baylor baseball (14-24, 5-11) was blown out in the series opener by No. 16 Texas Tech (28-12, 7-6), 10-1, Friday evening at Rip Griffin Park.
In the loss, BU’s offense was abysmal. The Bears totaled three hits and struck out 14 times.
One of the three hits came from freshman shortstop Kolby Branch, who extended his on-base streak to seven games.
Sophomore third baseman Hunter Teplanszky’s on-base streak ended at 25 games in the defeat. But on a more concerning note, Teplanszky exited the contest in the ninth with what appeared to be an injury.
Blake Helton started on the mound for BU and, after three solid innings of work, fell into trouble in the following inning.
The Red Raiders added six runs in the fourth, and Helton finished the game allowing seven earned runs and nine hits on 61 pitches in 3.1 innings of work.
The fifth-year senior has allowed more than three earned runs in all but one of his six Big 12 starts. Helton’s ERA currently sits at 8.72, the third-highest on the team.
Meanwhile, Texas Tech’s ace, Mason Molina, had a career day on the bump against the Bears. The sophomore lefty struck out a career-high 12 batters and surrendered only two hits in seven shutout frames.
Freshman lefty Ethan Calder allowed two earned runs in 3.1 innings of relief.
Junior second baseman Cole Posey added a solo home run in the ninth inning, his second of the season.
Final: Texas Tech 10 - Baylor 1
W: Mason Molina (4-2) L: Blake Helton (0-5)
