In college baseball, the double first base (also known as the safety base) is used primarily for player safety. It consists of two adjacent basesone white (in fair territory) and one orange (in foul territory). You'll typically see this setup in NCAA baseball, softball, and some lower levels of play.
How It's Used in Play:
On a Ground Ball The batter-runner must step on the orange base unless rounding for extra bases.
For a Pickoff or Tag Play If the runner is returning to first, they use the white base.
If There's No Play at First The runner can step on either part of the base.
