I thought this would be an interesting exercise to see where folks stand on the current state cable news as both sides are certainly taken to task here. Unfortunately, I spend entirely too much time watching all that crap just to make sense of it all. So, let's drill down host and shows in the big 3. Fox, CNN, MSNBC , CNBC, and Fox Business (as they float between biz and current events), not on networks as we have a general sense of their proclivities. I'll start.

Fox/Fox News
Like- Brett Baier (balanced), Bill Hemmer and Dana Perino, Martha McCallum, Neil Cavuto (love that guy)
Dislike - Hannity (worst offender), Tucker Carlson (close second), Jesse Watters, Greg Outfield (just terrible), Judge Janine (lost the SNL parody...she's a shill) Laura Ingram (nuff said), Stewart Barney, Charles Payne, Liz Clayton is fine, but tries to hard.

CNN
Like - Alison Camorata, Anderson Cooper (professional), Wolf (he delivers the news and no commentary ) Hala Gorani, CNN International (She is the best on CNN and it aint close) Christian Amanpour (very professional)
Dislike - Erin Burnet (met her once. really high opinion of herself) Don Lemmon (agenda, not gay either), Dana Bash, Gloria Borger

MSNBC/CNBC -

Like - Shep Smith (straight up news)
Dislike - Rachel Maddow, Chris Hayes, Joy Reid (all the same and terribly biased). Morning Joe Crew...Joe is ok, Mika..nah. Willie -Like him. He seems straight up and works his ass off. Not really a fan most folks here as it just as biased as fox. CNBC- I watch it most of all during the day. Becky Quick is awesome as I've had a beer with her. Joe Curnan, I like, Andrew, I also like. Hot and cold on Cramer.

not a comprehensive list, but it would be an interesting exercise.

Considering most of the major ones have their own shows including many you don't like, seems you would make better use of your time not watching them.

It depends on what one is cynical about and what you mean by cynical.

I stick to PBS for the most part and don't watch any of those shows.

For the shows where I've seen snippets, I particularly dislike the ones with formats (Maddow fits into this) where one person just talks on and on.

My likes: PBS Newshour - Some of their segments, like the one of Madeleine Albright this week, are overlong, but they offer better in-depth coverage of major news stories and interview good sources. I have absolutely no patience with their arts coverage or the occasional rambling essays by the aptly name Roger RosenBLAT; Washington Week-I like Bob Costa better than Alcindor. 60 Minutes-they still uncover some good stories; glad Anderson Cooper is one of their correspondents. Amanpour is a very good reporter.

Dislikes: Carlson, Hannity, Ingraham are unwatchable.Dislike Dana Bash. Intensely dislike Maria Bartiromo-what happened to the girl Joey Ramone loved so much he wrote a song about her? Haven't seen enough of any of the others. The leftwing talking heads seem like far distant second-fiddles in terms of following and influence. Who cares what they say except far righties who want something to grump about.

Reading: I read Ross Douthat's columns to try my patience, David Brooks' columns to get a centrist view but usually don't learn anything, Thomas Friendman because I do learn something, Dahlia Lithwick, Adam Liptak, Linda Greenhouse and Ruth Marcus on SCOTUS, and Paul Krugman because while he's more liberal than me, he understands how conservative pennywise and pound foolish policies hurt rather than help the economy (businesses that are capital-starved, where the owners don't invest in facilities, infrastructure, or employees & their training and education and healthcare, fail, and so do countries that don't make investments in their population to ensure ppl are healthy and well-educated and in instrastructure, like broadband and renewable energy, to make sure we have a platform to support entrepreneurs going forward. The WaPo has lots of columnists too liberal for me. Tired of conservative columnists who won't call out corrupction and treason--Douthat fits into that catagory. Gary Abernathy=lots of middle of the road conservatives on this site. I always want to punch Chris Buskirk in the face. Ditto for Ilya Shapiro-not a household name, but a Cato Institute shill.

Maybe there is a miscommunication about what cynicism is. Lay out the argument for the Biblical support of "Christian cynicism." I don't think it exists.
