Quote:

No change in doctrine or in political alignment can ever be admitted. For to change one's mind, or even one's policy, is a confession of weakness. If, for example, Eurasia or Eastasia (whichever it may be) is the enemy today, then that country must always have been the enemy. And if the facts say otherwise then the facts must be altered. Thus history is continuously rewritten.

From an actual Ministry of Truth to the deployment of Newspeak to rewriting history, 1984 is more real today than ever in the U.S.

But sam is still telling us how the ministry was good and just because it had the potential to be used wrong didn't make it a wrong organization.... or something like that.

People really need to understand and accept that every government function will be abused. It's not a question of if, it's when.

The patriot act is a good example.

The more government power, the more abuse. It's immutable.

The Patriot Act didn't just have the potential for abuse. It contained provisions that were abusive on their face. My point was to question whether that was the case here.

The disinfo governance board was abusive in its face.

The simple fact that they could label what they chose to as misinformation is abuse. They were going to be able to cite information they perceived as a threat to the US as misinformation.

Quote:

Documents reveal that the Disinformation Governance Board plans to partner with Big Tech were far more extensive than DHS or the White House has admitted. Internal emails detail how DHS officials planned to meet with Meta's Head of Security Policy Nathaniel Gleicher in February 2022, the same official who was in charge of security during Facebook's suppression of the New York Post's reporting on Hunter Biden ahead of the 2020 election. The Disinformation Governance Board also planned to establish an "analytic exchange" with "industry partners" in Big Tech.

Finally, the documents expose how the Disinformation Governance Board coordinated with the Omidyar Network, a left-wing dark money organization that has funneled millions of dollars into liberal advocacy groups. Emails show the Board received a document known as the "Z Memo" from the Omidyar Network in March. One week later, Jankowicz shared an op-ed authored by Omidyar staff with her colleagues.

Could you imagine that they determine an opinion that trans people can't change their gender as a dangerous idea and poses threat to LGBT people and then use that to pressure social media sites to remove any speech that fits that criteria? That's how this would have played out.

I can imagine it, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will happen. They've always had the ability to label misinformation with or without this board.
