The war is only unpopular in the sense that a lot of people think Putin is waging it too cautiously. That is Prigozhin's biggest complaint and Putin's biggest dilemma. Fortunately or unfortunately, the hardliners in both Russia and the West are pushing him toward more aggressive action.
They tried to take Kiev and got their heads handed to them. They are not "cautious" by choice.

As much as necessary to lose hundreds or thousands of men, including quite a few general officers, a bunch of armor, decimate moral, and embarrass his military. His plan was remarkably well executed if viewed with those goals in mind.
Then he would get his butt kicked in a way that even you couldn't deny.
The outcome would be undesirable and possibly catastrophic for Putin and his supporters. That is the point even if you missed it.
