My hero, Barry Goldwater, predicted where we are today nearly five decades ago.
Quote:
"Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them."
Barry Goldwater
Barry Goldwater would be a RINO under today's definitions. Look at his stances accordin to his Grand Daughter in this article.
Barry Goldwater and Today's GOP (newsweek.com)
I have been saying this all along, the positions of the GOP Conservative side is not the Conservativism of Reagan, Goldwater, Eisenhower and Bush. All of thier positions and actions would be defined as RINOs.
Hell, Trumps actually policies would qualify as RINO.
So the GOP has gone too far right, but all of the candidates it elected are RINOs. Interesting.
I agree with you on Goldwater. He was not a Christian or a conservative. When it comes to social issues, he could've cared less. Reagan, on the other hand, his policies were both fiscally and socially conservative. Was he as far right as DeSantis? Probably not, but to suggest he was a RINO truly is revisionist history.
I'm still waiting for you to name a republican candidate, who ran is a moderate in one a general election.
The controlling faction of the GOP is too far right. And the Conservative Leaders from the past if around today would not be able to meet their criteria for "non-RINO". Let's look at Reagan.
1 Voted for FDR 4 times and was fan of New Deal
2 Firm supporter of NATO and our involvement
3 Defense Spending - SDI, need I say more?
4 Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 - Amnesty, he actually did it.
5 Gun Control - Reagan was for gun control
6 Gay Rights - He was for gay rights
7 Raised taxes 3 times and expanded Earned Income Tax Credit
8 Saved SS
9 Expanded the Federal Govt and its power
10 Invaded Grenada
11 Gave weapons to Iraq and Afghanistan
So, if a RINO is someone that talks conservative, as defined by whoever is judging, and does not follow through doesn't Reagan fit?
Of course, I like Reagan's Conservatism, it was a mix of free market, freedom and realism to govern.
1) Trump was a registered Democrat for years before his 2016 run.
2) I think you confuse NATO support with asking NATO to pay more for their defense. When one country is providing 95% of the funding for NATO, it is anti-NATO to ask the other countries to pay more?
3) Spending money on defense is now anti-conservative? Stop the press!
4) The Immigration Reform and Control Act was an act that shared large bi-partisan support. Unfortunately, its authors did not foresee some of the complications of the act, which is why in later years Reagan came out and said if he knew now what he knew then, he wouldn't have signed it.
5) To the contrary, Reagan ran on his staunch support for the 2nd Amendment. Now, after he left office, he did support the Brady Bill, which called for background checks and was named after the dude who saved his life.
6) What gay rights did he support? Was he more pro-gay than Trump? Nope.
7) So, a little bit of revisionist history here. Reagan actually cut taxes when he came into office in 1981. Congress undid that by raising taxes in the following years. While Reagan signed those bills, he came out later and said he regretted having done so. But again, we were living in different times. At that time, taxes were 70% on the most wealthy.
8) Um....
https://www.politico.com/news/2023/03/01/trump-gop-medicare-social-security-000848459) If you recall, Reagan had 8 years of Democrat rule in Congress. Hard to pin that all on him.
10) While true, he also ran on a policy of pulling troops out of other countries, and walking softly while carrying a big stick. See the Lebanon withdrawal. Reagan was a just war advocate.
11) Do you think our supply of weapons to other countries stopped under Trump?
Again, it's hard to compare Reagan to Trump because the times have changed, but the idea that he was some RINO is revisionist history at best.
