Not sure what could compete with the first few days of Donald Trump taking the USA back to sanity other than maybe the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that earned the victory of the Pacific, which was about 3 or 4 days apart if memory serves.

It was a bit longer than a week, but maybe the writing of the Declaration of Independence started in June 1776 and ran through August when it was signed?

Any other week long or slightly longer thoughts?

No.

Winning WWI or WWII probably ranks up there.

I actually agree with the approach - Shock treatment. Pull the band-aid off hard and all-at-once.

I honestly don't think we would have gotten to the point where we have with either having Trump as POTUS or a 6-3 TRULY conservative/originalist SCOTUS if the Democrat party and their media and higher-ed allies and enablers hadn't just become so high-handed, to the point where they would simply fearlessly call anyone that stood in the way of their agenda as a nazi, criminal or worse. For years Republicans would try to court the media and or get some glancing approval from academia. But over the last 8 years, the mask has just come off and the left and the media have revealed that they were never interested in being honest brokers.

You'd think the 2 days after we won the war for independence would be up there, or the days after WWII when everyone realized their loved ones might not due, and might be home soon, would be up there.

Using nuclear weapons against Japan is just not a highlight at all. If you know anything about how pressured the President was to use them, you'd know they were basically just a flex. Despicable that we used them.

Far too early to spike the football.

Dems are stunned right now; but their legacy media dogs will eventually invent another 'issue'.

If you are limiting events to just one week……I would submit it was November 5th 2024 and the week that followed.

Because if Harris had won the election the United States was guaranteed to be destroyed.

Culturally, financially and militarily.

Good point. And it would have taken decades to rebuild LA. Trump is there right now, waiving federal regulations, overruling the California Coastal Commission, and telling the LA Mayor that folks need to start cleaning up TONIGHT!

Agreed

My father was on destroyer off the coast of Okinawa; only about 300 miles from the Japanese mainland.

The Japanese kept attacking US ships with suicide planes. Most were successfully shot down but it took only one hit to cause dozens or even hundreds of US casualties.

Dad said moral went to hell. The slogan became ……

' Home Alive in 45 '.

To his dying day Dad always maintained Truman did the right thing dropping the two atomic bombs.

Yeah I can't remember how many American lives we were projected to lose if we fought a war all the way to Tokyo. We decided it was better to lose Japanese lives than far more American lives. And let's be honest, the Japanese would have fought to the death as well.

They started it, let's not forget.

And also, those two events also prevented war with USSR, the Cold War. The threat of atomic bombs went past theory and became reality.

It was projected that the US would suffer a million casualties invading Japan.
But there was another factor today's historians ignore .

During to push towards Japan there were only 2 islands with a significant population of civilians.

Saipan and Okinawa.

In both battles huge numbers of civilians were killed. Either by US ordinance, suicide , or intentional murder by the Japanese' troops. On Okinawa alone there was almost 75,000 civilian casualties.

If the US attacked the Japanese mainland, US planners feared Japanese civilian deaths would have been in the millions.

My dad spent 3 years in the Pacific war. Hit the beaches at Saipan, Makin, and Okinawa. Like all the other guys he would have been part of the invasion of Japan. After Okinawa no one wanted to invade Japan. Minimum 1 million U.S. casualties plus millions of Japanese killed and maimed. Dad also believe that, while the bombs were horrible, it was the right thing to do for both the U.S. service men and the Japanese civilians.

My Father was a medic on a landing craft in the South Pacific in WW2. He could have easily been a casualty if USA had to invade Japan. Using the atomic bombs in Japan was a logical choice to end the war. UsingMy father was a medic on a landing craft in the South Pacific during World War II. He could have easily become a casualty if the USA had invaded Japan. The decision to use atomic bombs on Japan was a strategic choice to bring the war to an end. While the use of the bombs is a significant point in history, I wouldn't consider it a highlight. the bombs was a noteable point in history, but I would not call it a highlight.

Hiroshima was on August 6
Nagasaki was on August 9

In between, on August 8, the Soviet Union declared war on Japan and rushed to seize territories they had lost in 1905 in the Treaty of Portsmouth (ending Russo-Japanese War).

When Japanese scientists confirmed that a single atomic bomb had devastated each city…..it provided the emperor with the necessary excuse with which to convince his generals to surrender.

Otherwise far more Japanese lives would have been sacrificed carrying on the war.

Even if the US chose not to invade Japan , they were facing massive starvation as the US Navy had sunk 90 % of Japanese merchant shipping.

Without which they couldn't import even near enough food supplies to feed their population.

Even after their surrender and despite massive US aid…..the Japanese endured food shortages for 3-4 years.

No, it isn't based on assuming a ground invasion, it is based on Japanese civilians starving to death with or without a ground invasion. Saying we "could have easily used conventional bombs until they capitulated" may be true, but those "conventional bombs" were also quite deadly to civilians and continuing to use them to force capitulation would have likely killed more civilians over time than two atomic bombs did. Additionally, blockading Japan until their population starved to death would have killed many more than the atomic bombs did.

Dropping those bombs was horrible. Mathematically, however, it killed far fewer than Truman's other available options.

Sounds very utilitarian. What if China wants to nuke our 350 million population to save their 1.1 billion?

I would argue that it's never morally right to commit evil to bring about a good.

So it was ok because we killed innocents that were going to starve anyway?
