How do you like to imagine that you would have reacted when war broke out in Europe in September of 1939?

Do you like to imagine that you would have traveled to England and become a Yank in the R.A.F.?

Or do you like to imagine that you would have stayed home, but at least offered verbal opposition to Germany?

Or do you like to imagine that you would have joined Charles Lindbergh's isolationist "America First" movement?

And, if the American President had claimed, wrongly, that it was Poland that invaded Germany, and not the other way around, do you imagine that you would have supported him?

This is at best a really dumb and inapplicable weak attempt to draw some non-existent comparison to current attempts to end the Russia/Ukraine war and the reaction to Germany's 1939 invasion of Poland.

First of all, the Trump led "America First" movement isn't at all isolationist. It's based on what's first and foremost in the best interests of the USA and its citizens/taxpayers including international affairs that we are and must be involved with. And continuing to willy nilly dump tens of $billions into an unsustainable and unwinnable (for Ukraine) quagmire isn't in the best interests of the USA - especially given how corrupt the Ukrainian government has demonstrably been over the course of a number of years.

Secondly, nobody from the Trump administration (including Trump) ever suggested that Ukraine invaded Russia, or that Putin isn't an evil, aggressive dictator whose ultimate goal is re-assembling the old Soviet Union.

Everyone understands who started the war - largely because of the consequences of a stolen 2020 election in the USA - but it's high time to accept the situation as it is and move forward with ending the conflict in the best way possible given that Ukraine can't win it and given that the USA is (wisely) unwilling to launch WWIII over it. Trump is the only one proposing a viable solution to the conflict and there is no comparison to this and the isolationist USA's response to the 1939 German invasion of Poland.

The vast majority of the American people wanted to say out of what they saw as another pointless European blood bath

And they were right of course

Congress overwhelming passed the neutrality acts....[the United States Congress continued to demand American neutrality. Between 1936 and 1937, much to the dismay of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Congress passed the Neutrality Acts.]

When the American first committee was established....it quickly ballooned to 850,000 members in 450 chapters in every city in the country within a few months.

There were only 130 million people in the USA in 1940....so that 850,000 is a massive number

By 1939 the American people realized their sacrifices in WW1 were for nothing.

And they didn't want to be played for suckers again in 1939.

But Churchill and Roosevelt had other ideas.

Honestly worse than nothing

It was the defeat of Germany that led to the later creation and rise of the Nazi party

It was because of the WWI that Russia collapsed and the Bolshevik-Communists took power creating the USSR

The collapse of the Ottoman Empire is what has led to the rise of 100 years of conflict and war in the Middle East.

Had WWI never happened the world would have been much better off

WWI helped Japan get a foothold on expansion in Asia

In just about every way we can think of World War I was a civilizational disaster and it led right into World War II and the Cold war

Horrible....and all over mostly nothing

It can be argued that the period from 1914 through 1989 that began with the Sarajevo assassination of Austria Hungary's Franz Ferdinand and ended with the collapse of the Berlin Wall was one long international conflict that included both World Wars and the Cold War. All of it was connected.

As a student of history, I sometimes like to imagine what it would be like, and how I would have reacted, if I had been present during various historical events. Here's my take.

I don't imagine myself traveling to England and becoming a Yank in the R.A.F.. Nor do I imagine myself joining Lindbergh's "America First" movement. I would imagine myself as taking the middle ground until December 7, 1941, and then enlisting after that.

That being said, I have heard that history doesn't repeat itself, but it sometimes rhymes. Russia's invasion of Ukraine rhymes in several respects with Germany's invasion of Poland.

And, yes, I have seen several news items about Trump claiming that Ukraine started the war with Russia. You can look it up.

Western Europe sees them. Not sure why we don't.

In reality, the last 500 years in world history has been a giant international conflict. In fact the last 50 years has been one of the most peaceful periods in that history.

There are some striking parallels between the late 1930s and today.

Western Europe sees them. Not sure why we don't.

Not great parallels

1. There is not a current world wide depression destabilizing whole countries and leading to mass disaffection among the populations.

[Over the winter of 1929-30 the number of unemployed rose from 1.4 million to over 2 million. By the time Hitler became Chancellor. By January 1933 one in three Germans were unemployed]

2. There are not millions of violent (and capable) WWI veterans around who have embraced fascist utopian and revolutionary ideology and are willing to kill to achieve their political ends

3. Millions of others have not embraced a new far left totalitarian revolutionary ideology Communism and taken over the old Russian Empire and all its vast resources and huge population.

4. Unlike the 1930s...there is now a single great super power that is far and above the greatest military power.

[The US controls about 750 bases in 80 countries and spends more on its military than the next 10 countries combined.]

5. There is not a endless amount of young men who are available to be mobilized for total war and thrown into the meat grinder by modern industrialized States.

[The world's total fertility rate in 2024 is estimated to be 2.2 births per woman, according to the United Nations. This is lower than the 2.4 births per woman projected in 2018]

[A significant number of countries around the world are currently experiencing an "aging crisis," meaning a rapidly increasing proportion of their population is reaching retirement age, putting strain on social security systems and workforce availability due to declining birth rates; countries like Japan, South Korea, and Italy are particularly impacted by this demographic shift]
