The argument in the title is disingenuous. The truth is there have been men who pretended to be women. The vast vast majority knew that they were men. The ones that didn't know that they were men, were correctly diagnosed with a mental problem.

Pretending to be a woman used to be laughed at in comedy and overlooked in day-to-day encounters. But then, PROGRESSIVES started arguing that they were in fact women. They lied, and they created a whole class of men who pretend to be women AND expect you to pretend as well. They went to war against women in the name of wokeness. They went in to the schools to groom the kids and force their nonsense on the kids. Now PROGRESSIVES want you to continue to lie, they know very well that men can't become women, they just want everyone to play pretend. I would turn your own argument around and ask you: if we have bigger fish to fry, why does the radical left think this is THE hill to die upon? Why is men competing against women so important to the left? Why is exposing children to gay porn THE hill to die upon?

The problem we have currently is the gap between what I call legitimate people with gender dysphoria and men cosplaying as women. Virtually all legitimate trans people want to be left alone to live their lives not bothering anyone and not seeking attention.

What we have currently is a political-cultural phenomenon driven by two factors:

1. The money - once gay marriage was universally passed and generally accepted, the Gaystapo needed a new issue to stay relevant and keep fundraising. The "trans" was a convenient issue to keep the party going.

2. The culture - once being gay was no longer controversial, attention seeking people needed to stay relevant and be different, so becoming "trans" was an easy way to do that. Today, being gay is just so 1990s and boring, so the attention seekers need a new thing.

The "fake trans" rights movement is silly, anti-scientific, and irrational. There is a huge gap between treating folks with gender dysphoria with respect and love and pretending anyone that randomly declares himself "trans" is an actual woman and should be treated like a woman, especially when it harms real women and real girls. I is degrading to science, intellect, and the culture overall. It is exacerbated by the fact that Big Pharma and Big Trans is obsessed with mutilating children.
