tin Foil said: "you're an idiot. Jesus did not call nations to enact socialist governments.
Also, conservatives are the most charitable people. Libis are scumbags who want to take other people's money rather than use their own."
My response:
Matthew 25 does not prescribe socialismand I never claimed it did. That's a straw man.
Jesus' point is that how we treat the hungry, the stranger, the sick, the naked, and the imprisoned is a matter of moral accountability before God. In Matthew 25, that standard is explicitly applied to the nations.
So the question isn't, "Did Jesus command a socialist government?" He didn't.
The question is: Does Jesus' command to care for vulnerable people have anything to say about the moral responsibilities of a nation? Matthew 25 makes it very difficult to argue that it doesn't.
And saying "conservatives are charitable and liberals are scumbags who want other people's money" isn't an argument. Christians on both sides give generously. The real debate is over how we should fulfill our obligations to our neighborsthrough churches and private charity, government, or some combination of both.
You can reject socialism without pretending that Matthew 25 has nothing to say about public morality.
