Both things can be true that our representatives try to fear monger us and AI is a potential threat to humanity.

As someone in the space, I don't think the average American understands the catastrophic impact it could make with little to no guardrails.

Yeah I fully agree on that first part. Having these AI companies (preparing to go public lol...) influencing the government to crush competition and set their desired regulations is not a good approach for obvious reasons.

I'd argue though that the pressure and issues caused by AI though are already tangible and not super hypothetical. AI-enabled fraud, deepfakes, cyberattacks, job displacement, data center strain on local communities, etc, and the models will just get cheaper and more powerful.

My personal hope is narrow guardrails, independent safety testing, and clear liability for companies that cause harm.

Those are legitimate issues that must be dealt with. Deviating that AI will "kill us all" is ridiculous paranoia. It's no different than the silly lies we were told by the Climate Cult and the covid & vax Nazis. They will say & do the craziest things to convince us to surrender our money & freedom to them. We should ignore them and prosecute them for their scams.

In many cases I don't see the motive to crush the competition per se (I understand that the Anthropic guy walked away from a huge payout, for example).

I can see the technology either running into a wall or becoming a serious threat. People like Elon Musk, who welcome the idea of machines keeping humans as pets or replacing us altogether, are literally insane.
