Trump's defenders may not believe it's all about economics, but they don't mind pretending whenever anyone points out Trump's flagrant undermining of democratic processes. As for paganism, it's a strong and growing influence in our society. It's mainly seen on the left, although the right's emphasis on tribalism and dominance is essentially pagan as well. At some point the two sides with merge through some combination of agreement, acquiescence, and force. Whether the result will be a relatively pure form of Marxism or some neo-fascist variant remains to be seen. Ten years ago I'd have bet on the radical left, but the fascists certainly seem to have the momentum now.

The nationalist bent of this administration is undeniable, and drives many economic approaches. The socialist adjacent policies they're pushing does create a logical description as National Socialist. The welfare system is long established in the USA and itself was and is a major goal of the liberals and left wing in the USA

Orban's government in Hungary was a classic example of nationalism and welfare/social safety net programs. And yet fully democratic (leaving power willing after losing a free and fair election).

Yet these same scare mongering charges were thrown out against him as well.

center-right socially and center-left on economics is a common style of politics and often very popular at the polls.

Many parties like this access the globe. And in Europe it was often called "Christian Democracy". With parties in the Netherlands, Poland, and other places following this model

It's only strange for the GOP because the party has for a long time been dominated by an establishment class that was center-left on social issues and center-right on economics. (Neo-cons, country club republicans, ect.)
