Pepe the Frog is a popular Internet meme. A green anthropomorphic frog with a humanoid body, Pepe originated in a comic by Matt Furie called Boy's Club. It became an Internet meme when its popularity steadily grew across Myspace, Gaia Online and 4chan in 2008. By 2015, it had become one of the most popular memes used on 4chan and Tumblr.
By 2016, the character's image had been appropriated as a symbol of the controversial alt-rightmovement. The Anti-Defamation League added certain incarnations of Pepe the Frog to their database of hate symbols in 2016, adding that not all Pepe memes are racist. Since then, Pepe's creator has publicly expressed his dismay at Pepe being used as a hate symbol.
I'd never seen it until 2016 either. I'm aware that Pepe's creator does not approve of how his character has been appropriated. Of course, the swastika was originally a symbol from India that meant good luck.Osodecentx said:I'd never heard of Pepe until this thread.bubbadog said:

Don't know about Gaia online (sounds like a pagan thing), but 4chan is an online forum kind of a mix of Snapchat and Reddit, while Tumblr uses visual images and text to discuss social and political issues. In reading the article, I saw that the candidate for student government said that she didn't know what the symbol meant. I do think that's plausible. Her beef was that they weren't allowed to attend the hearing where the fate of the candidacy was decided. I think that was wrong on the part of the school. But it doesn't change what that symbol has come to mean, and it's not like the ADL was the one to define it. It's the white supremacist, alt-right groups themselves that adopted the symbol.

About the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Not saying you're incorrect, but a cartoon only has power if idiots allow themselves to be offended.
