This looks like big trouble for Trump. Why isn't this obstruction?

Attorney General Barr wrote the following in June, 2018:
And the soon to be new Attorney General wrote on June 8th of last year: "If a President . . . suborns perjury, or induces a witness to change testimony, or commits any act deliberately impairing the integrity of available evidence, then he, like anyone else, commits the crime of obstruction."

Buzzfeed published the following:
Trump directed Michael Cohen to lie to Congress about his business interests in Russia. "The special counsel's office learned about Trump's directive for Cohen to lie to Congress through interviews with multiple witnesses from the Trump Org and internal company emails, text messages, and a cache of other documents."

It would be obstruction if it were anybody else. But Trump will build a beautiful wall that will eliminate illegal aliens and give us drug free inner cities and the economy is fantastic so it wont mean anything.

It will be serious if true. So far this report has not been substantiated.

My biggest issue is if this is true, why are we hearing about this through a clickbait news source? Why isn't Trump already being indicted? If they have emails and texts that indicate this, why aren't they taking him down already? What's the hold up? He's already halfway through his first term and if this goes much longer, he'll finish the term. Why let him stay in office one day longer? It doesn't make any sense.

I think a sitting president cannot be indicted. The remedy would be impeachment and removal from office.

I don't think it has. We are getting reports from a freaking click-bait website. If it had started, we would be reading reports and hearing about this from news conferences in front of the Capitol building.

Edit: seriously. I just went to buzzfeed and the top story is "what % Marie Kondo are you?" This is who we are getting this bombshell report from.

Because it's not true.
Cohen would not be sentenced if this were true.

It's just another scenario of left wing news trying to get ahead and divert attention away from damning new info.

Congress to probe report that Trump directed lawyer to lie in testimony

WASHINGTON The Democratic chairmen of two House committees pledged Friday to investigate a report that President Donald Trump directed his personal attorney to lie to Congress about negotiations over a real estate project in Moscow during the 2016 election.
House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said "we will do what's necessary to find out if it's true." He said the allegation that Trump directed Michael Cohen to lie in his 2017 testimony to Congress "in an effort to curtail the investigation and cover up his business dealings with Russia is among the most serious to date."
The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Jerrold Nadler of New York, said directing a subordinate to lie to Congress is a federal crime.

"The @HouseJudiciary Committee's job is to get to the bottom of it, and we will do that work," Nadler tweeted.
The report by BuzzFeed News, citing two unnamed law enforcement officials, says that Trump directed Cohen to lie to Congress and that Cohen regularly briefed Trump and his family on the Moscow project even as Trump said he had no business dealings with Russia.
The Associated Press has not independently confirmed the BuzzFeed report.
An adviser to Cohen, Lanny Davis, declined to comment on the substance of the article, saying that he and Cohen wouldn't answer questions out of respect for special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe. Mueller is investigating Russia meddling in the election and contacts with the Trump campaign.
The BuzzFeed story says that Cohen told Mueller that Trump personally instructed him to lie about the timing of the project in order to obscure Trump's involvement.
Trump's lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, scoffed at the report, saying in a statement, "If you believe Cohen I can get you a good all cash deal on the Brooklyn Bridge."

Cohen pleaded guilty in November to lying to Congress in 2017 to cover up that he was negotiating the real estate deal in Moscow on Trump's behalf during the heat of his presidential campaign. The charge was brought by Mueller and was the result of his cooperation with that probe.
Cohen was recently sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to tax crimes, bank fraud and campaign violations. He is scheduled to testify before the House Oversight and Reform Committee Feb. 7.
The report comes as House Democrats have promised a thorough look into Trump's ties to Russia. Though House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has discouraged any talk of impeachment in the early days of her new majority, some senior Democrats said that if the BuzzFeed report is true, Trump's actions could rise to that level.

"If the @BuzzFeed story is true, President Trump must resign or be impeached," tweeted Texas Rep. Joaquin Castro, a member of the House intelligence panel.
Rhode Island Rep. David Cicilline, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, tweeted that if Trump directed Cohen to lie, "that is obstruction of justice. Period. Full stop."
William Barr, Trump's nominee for attorney general, said at his Senate confirmation hearing Tuesday that a president or anyone else who directs a witness to lie is illegally obstructing an investigation. That statement attracted attention given Barr's expansive views of presidential powers and his belief that presidents can't be scrutinized by prosecutors for acts the Constitution allows them to take.

Please tell me where I said it wasn't obstruction? I just said the process to impeach Trump hasn't started and I still don't think it has because no one has made an official statement on this. And the AP article you quote below quotes Buzzfeed as the primary source. Again, I'm not saying it is or it isn't obstruction, but I'll wait until I hear from named sources before I rely on a story from Buzzfeed of all places.

Again, if the investigators have texts and emails that prove Trump did this, bring the mfcker down already. Why delay any longer? Why let a known criminal continue to be the president one more day? Something just doesn't add up.

No one can argue there isn't a double standard w/ a straight face anymore. The majority of liberals in the media or in Washington have zero ethics or morals so they could care less what they do to take back power. Trump is certainly far from perfect but he's got a raw deal from the media Hollywood and liberals just like all Republicans do.

All this hysteria the press has pushed from day 1 has been about Russia & Racism. It's old political games but it keeps working for them so why stop now?

It's because the media has purposefully avoided anything related to SPYGATE for the most part.

To them it's conspiracy theory nonsense...even with supporting documentation. If the media picks it up and charges are made, they will finally understand.

Mueller hinted at all of this in the sentencing filing pertaining to Cohen. It is not surprising. The sentencing document said:

The kicker in the Buzzfeed article is the assertion that Trump Org documents along with other material back up the claim that Trump told Cohen to lie.

Sidenote: the belief that "if Cohen had the goods on Trump then he wouldn't serve any jail time" is completely bogus as a lot of what he was dealing with were different charges (US District Court - New York) and not charges brought by Mueller. What he has received from Mueller has been lenient in comparison. That leniency signifies substantial cooperation.

Hi, I'm a fanatical liberal and clearly you don't know how journalism works. If they give sources or evidence, they could lose access. So they publish things without sources which perfectly match my feelings, and thus that's true. I don't need evidence, my echo chambers support me.

I would say you have federally financed alcoholism...but then I remembered you can't use EBT cards to buy liquor.

(Tip of the hat to Liberally Lean from the land of Dairy Queen, an entertaining blog published by a Baylor lawyer)

For all this talk about 'impeachment .......please tell me how the Democrats get 60 votes in the Senate to convict ?

Never going to happen and the general public realizes this is all pure politics anyway.....so any impact on independent voters come 2020 is going to be minimal.

Presidents usually win re election on 2 issues.....peace and the economy. And Trump is winning big on both right now. Most folks enjoy paying only 2 dollars a gallon for gasoline in their new BMW or F-150.

Of course Trump has the horrible habit of lashing out on Twitter . So self defeating. 2020 is going to be interesting.

Perhaps because Mueller doesn't want to issue his final report piecemeal.

I don't know if the reports here are true. I have no opinion about them, but there is no way Mueller will be issuing his final report until it is complete.
His team is notorious for illegally leaking.

I fully expect the final report to leak.
Cohen is going to leak on live TV in a couple of weeks. Should be fun.
First time any of us old Trolls ever heard you make that assumption......and be wrong.

You need 67 Senate votes to convict. Not 60.

People thought Nixon was safe until the evidence convinced enough Republicans that he had to go. He spared them, and the country, by resigning.

I don't know what Mueller will report, but I cannot fathom Trump resigning no matter what.
