My point is that except for Clinton winning the Democrats' nomination in 2016, neither party's front-runner 3 years ahead of the election got the nomination, and none of them won the election itself. The candidate who wins generally announces their candidacy less than 2 years before the election, with George W Bush and Ronald Reagan the only exceptions in the last 50 years.
