We have a duty to protect the Ukraine. Hopefully we do. It was worth promising, in order to avoid another nuclear power.

No doubt Putin is exceptionally impressed with our military and commander in chief.

Might cause him to hold off his attack for almost 20 minutes.

Ukraine isn't in NATO, so we don't have treaty obligations to defend Ukraine.

Would you go nuclear to defend Ukraine?

No.

Would not risk a single US serviceman for any country in Europe.

World War 2 has been over for almost 75 years.

It is ridiculous that the United States is STILL paying for European defense . Especially when they rarely if ever pay their own needed defense budgets .

Russian ground forces can't sustain a prolonged engagement either in terms of men or materiel. Anything lost on the battlefield will be very difficult to replace. If we pledged air support to the Ukrainians, Putin would back down, IMO. Putin is corrupt but not a fool. He knows a major military engagement with the US would leave him a third-world economy with a third-world military.

Our F-15 Strike Eagle and Warthog squadrons would decimate the Russian armored divisions and their close air support.

Convince Joe that Putin is really his old nemesis Corn Pop and I'm sure he will get tough.

I think you need to consider possibilities. Obama drew a red line in Syria and did nothing. WW1 started when a cascading series of treaty obligations ended up killing millions.

Adults consider down side possibilities. Would you go nuclear on Russia for Ukraine?

No one is going to nuclear for Ukraine. Russia sure isn't. So, no, the odds are pretty remote that either belligerent party goes nuclear over a conflict in the Ukraine. I hope you realize that.

The better question is whether the American public should support defending Ukraine given our current military and civilian leadership. They screwed up a withdrawal. I have no confidence in their ability to win an armed conflict or to competently lend support to our allies.

In a way, since the end of WWII, Europe has been kind of like a young 20 something adult that moves back in with their parents because through some unforeseen catastrophe they're unable to support themselves and need time to get themselves re-established so they can move on and ultimately function again like a normal adult. Except now they're in their mid 40's and nothing has changed - they're still dependent on their parents.

Left bank Ukraine is populated by ethnic Russians who don't want to be ruled by Kiev/Kyiv.

Lets also not forget the savage war the U.S. Federal government waged in 1861 under Lincoln to keep New Orleans and the mouth of the Mississippi river in the Federal Union.

The Crimea and its warm water port is as important to the Russian Federation & Putin as New Orleans is/was to the U.S. Federal Government.
