Notes and thoughts UA Houston camp- Defense
The talent at the Houston camp was tremendous on the offensive side but it was also filled with very solid defensive prospects as well. Let's go through some of the names that stood out:-2020 defensive lineman Princely Umanmielen won Big Man MVP and it was well deserved. He was unblock able all day long and is all of 6'4. This is the kind of guy that can come in to any program in the country and play true defensive end or defensive tackle at a very high level. He uses his hands well and has a great first step.https://twitter.com/GrayGrundhoefer/status/1097270232199122944-I was mixed what I saw from 2020 Cedar Creek defensive end Alfred Collins and Richmond Foster defensive tackle Chidozie Nwankwo . Collins has great size and length to go along with a nice first step. At times he did not appear to bend as consistently as I would like from the edge but the potential is there. Nwankwo is simply not built for camps because he does not have a ton of moves besides power right now. He won some and got dominated in others but I love the way he keeps himself so low to the ground. That will help him a ton at the next level.https://twitter.com/Perroni247/status/1097188890824376324-Some quick hitters on the defensive line: Cy Ridge's Vernon Broughton has a massive ceiling but he is still so raw and has a ways to go from a strength standpoint. Shadow Creek's Alec Bryant has impressed me ever since I saw him last year because he has a relentless motor, great strength, and solid speed. Stafford's Robert Wooten had a terrific camp in which he showed good athleticism and technique. Wooten had the best first step at the camp and I think he is one the verge of blowing up. Antonian's Devin Grant has good size and has a high ceiling because he has not been properly developed up to this point. I mentioned his name a week ago but he is one to continue watching. Alief Elsik's Clinton Anokwuru showed impressive speed off the edge. Katy Thompkins' 2021 defensive end Tunmise Adeleye is already a handful for offensive linemen to deal with but he still has a lot of growing to do.-2020 C.E. King defensive end Jessie Evans continues to impress me every time I see him. He was at Baylor camp this summer and was sensational and then again at camp on Sunday. His speed, first step, and bend around the edge. This kid is a stud and I think Baylor should offer him soon.-A pair of Baylor offers had pretty good days at linebacker. Klein's Will Garner and Cy Creek's Josh White both showed me some major positives to go along with some weaknesses but they were the best linebackers I saw today. Garner is much more adept at rushing the passer than he is in coverage and it showed. He has good speed and burst but he can't flips his hips very well yet. So during one on one drills he had trouble staying with running backs consistently. White was tremendous in all of the drills and the coaches were raving about him. But again in one on ones that just is simply not his game. Both need work in coverage but they are both athletic enough to take care of that part of their games.-Fort Bend Bush linebacker Kenneth Phillips had another nice showing but I do not love his size. Still he is a physical player that has an edge about him that I really like. A name to watch is 2021 New Caney LB Derrick Harris Jr. He is so explosive and has a perfect frame to add more weight and size. He is still raw but all the signs point to him being able to get better and better each year. I could see him easily being a four star or higher in the future as his offer list builds up. -Three safeties really stood out to me and they were Lufkin's Jerrin Thompson , Shadow Creek's Xavion Alford , and C.E. King's Bryson Washington . Thompson is a guy that has improved a lot to me. He just put out his junior film recently and that was improved plus his performance at camp was encouraging. He has decent speed, very good size, plays with a ton of physicality, and seems to have a good feel for positioning. He was impressive in coverage all day long. Alford is one that I have gotten to see twice in person over the past two months and one that I wish Baylor would have offered sooner. He is so skilled, has a great feel for the game, and has terrific technique to go along with solid athleticism. He would be great in Baylor's secondary. Washington has great speed and range to go along with tremendous size. This was my first time seeing him in person and it was impressive.https://twitter.com/TO98_Kroog/status/1097276622091239424https://twitter.com/GrayGrundhoefer/status/1097277497127899136-Steele's A&M cornerback commit Jaylon Jones did not have the best day. UTSA coach Frank Wilson pointed him out as a guy not having a great performance and asked me who he was. I told him and he laughed and said we recruited him. Even though the performance wasn't his best I still think this guy is special. His frame reminds me so much of Derrek Thomas but Jones is more athletic. If he can work on his hips some more he is going to be one heck of a player.-A few other corner's to note. Dickinson's DJ Warnell is a guy that really impressed me today and I think Baylor could offer. He has elite size and was fast enough to keep up with some of the elite wide receivers at the camp plus he had good hips. This kid is a stud. Strake Jesuit's Denzel Blackwell has good speed and attacks the ball really well but receivers were able to create some separation on him today. He has a Baylor offer. Aldine MacArthur Josh Eaton has tremendous size but was injured early on in camp so I did not get to see him at full strength. My bet is that the kid can play though because aft the got hurt he decided to fight through it for a little. Then he faced the best receiver there three or four times so definitely had some respect for that. He has a Baylor offer. Another Baylor George Ranch's Faybian Marks looks a little smaller than I realized but he had a pretty good day and was able to stay in front of receivers pretty consistently. North Shore's Joseph Wilson showed some great things today. He has a very good frame and his hips were pretty fluid. I liked what I saw from him.
