Friday Morning Recruiting Notes
Possibly the best news for Baylor that came out yesterday is that Louisiana defensive end Justin Harris cancelled (or had cancelled?) his official visit to Texas A&M. There are reports that Harris had his official visit to Texas A&M cancelled because of "red flags" surrounding grade issue. That very well may be true. But I also know that Harris told me at the time that he set the visit to College Station that the visit was more for pleasure than seriousness in Texas A&M. Now he is heading to LSU for an official. This one will come down to if LSU decides to extend an offer. If they do, Harris is likely to commit. If he doesn't? Baylor sits in more than prime position. The basketball star turned football player likely does have some questions surrounding qualification, but Matt Rhule and his staff have been on Harris dating back to their time at Temple and immediately approaching Harris when they arrived in Waco. Baylor needs numbers so there is no question that they would pursue someone on the fence, but they would also not waste significant time traveling to Louisiana to see someone who didn't have a chance.Harris took an official visit to Purdue previously and will take an official visit to Baylor the final weekend. Additional news regarding Baylor came out regarding TE/DE BJ Thompson when the Arkansas prospect set an official visit to Florida State and picked up offers from Texas and Purdue. Good for Baylor is that Thompson is still set with his official visit to Baylor next weekend. He will officially visit Florida State (without an offer) starting on Wednesday Jan. 25. Texas will be just before then starting on Jan. 23. I am not positive, but I believe that he does have an official set for the weekend as well. Remember that Baylor like Thompson at both the TE/DE position and he wants to play both. Matt Rhule's tweet of a Temple TE getting a catch and then getting a sack in the same game several weeks ago was directed to Thompson. Thompson told me that there has not been any school recruiting him harder than Baylor at this time. The Texas offer gives me a little pause, but considering he will be two official visits between that one and the time he makes his decision (with Baylor to close things out), that is a huge advantage for Baylor. Note: If this gets anywhere else we will know it was taken off of here and put there. His name was included in the reset of official visitors, but 6-foot-5, 240-pound DL Cole Maxwell came up so quickly I haven't had time to get a profile created. The District 6-6A Defensive MVP from Allen has gone completely under the radar, but his size and film don't add up to it. Maxwell is also a pitcher for Allen's baseball team who throws in the low 90s, but it sounds as though football is an option for him as well. http://www.hudl.com/video/3/3471494/5721d9584df6124b7027a8a2https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GobjMP8Im8AAfter his in-home visit with Matt Rhule and Joey McGuire, it seems as though things continue to settle down with offensive lineman Xavier Newman (DeSoto). Newman committed to Baylor on Sunday, but when KD Nixon and Laviska Shenault affirmed their commitments to Colorado, things were on shaky ground for Newman.I would still keep an eye on him, but without an official visit left to take to Colorado, Baylor needs to get a good grip and hold steady for the next 11 days.

Coaches In-Home Visit Tonight
The Baylor coaches will be having an in-home visit with OL commit Xavier Newman today. The Baylor coaches have talked to Newman and he assured them that everything was good. It is still best to approach this with caution due to his close relationship with teammates, and Colorado commits, KD Nixon and Laviska Shenault.

Notes on two WRs
Justin (TX) Northwest wide receiver Gavin Holmes has his official visit scheduled to Baylor for this weekend. With KD Nixon (DeSoto) opting to stick with Colorado on Wednesday evening, this is a big battle for Baylor to help fill out the wide receiver position in the 2017 class.Holmes has told me that he is down to Baylor, Arizona State and Nebraska. I spoke with him the day after he left his official visit to ASU and he was pumped up about the visit. "I loved it..." That was his response when I asked about his trip. I followed that up and asked if he was thinking about pulling the trigger while he was there. "I was, but I wanted to visit Baylor before I did honestly."(At this point he told me he hadn't announce it yet, but he would commit on Monday, Jan. 23. He announced that on Twitter Wednesday evening.)That didn't exactly take me by surprise, but the fact of the matter is that he was thinking about Baylor when his was in Tempe. He's had Baylor in his top six for roughly a month (along with ASU, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oregon, UCLA and Utah.)"I wanted to get a feel for the new coaches and definitely give them a chance before I committed. And plus, they are close to home. So that's a plus."Two things that Baylor has going in their advantage here: Matt Lubick and the playing time they have to offer at the slot position. The second bit of info is on Mesquite (TX) Horn receiver Reggie Roberson (6-0, 180). Another slot receiver, Roberson received a visit at Horn just the other day from Baylor OC/WR coach Matt Lubick. It was the first time for Roberson to visit with Lubick, but Lubick made it know what type of player that he felt Roberson is. "He said a lot," Roberson said. "He said he can see me playing inside and outside and that I'm fast. I can play as a freshman and that he likes me a lot. He likes me a lot and [he said] he would have offered me at Oregon if he knew about me. And a lot more."Roberson transferred to Horn after spending his first three years at Bishop Dunne. Since putting up over 1000 yards and 11 touchdowns on 60 catches, he has received offers from Washington State, Oregon State, Utah and West Virginia. He also holds offers from Illinois, Indiana and Kansas. He has taken visits to Illinois (fall) and Washington State (Jan. 13). He now has visits set for Utah (Jan. 20) and WVU (Jan. 27). I asked Roberson if Lubick wanted him to visit and Roberson told me that he did, but he would not set anything up until they set the offer. http://www.hudl.com/video/3/7652781/583b2a785b3cda08106a1bd6

2017 Class Possibility 1/10
With four signees currently in class and some mid-year transfers expected, here is a view of what the breakdown could be for 2017.2017 MID-YEAR ENROLLEESQB - Anu Solomon (Arizona)QB - Charlie Brewer (Lake Travis)RB - Abram Smith (Abilene)WR - RJ Sneed (Cy Ranch)DL - James Lockhart (Texas A&M)DB - Jalen Pitre (Stafford)Possible addition to MID-YEAROL - Tyler Moore (Minnesota)2017 CLASS (25 MEMBERS)QB - Avery Davis (NOTRE DAME) or Tyler Lytle (COLORADO)Notes: These two are a longshot, but Baylor continues to attempt to pry one loose.RB - Lakendrick Van Zandt (TCU) John Lovett Notes: Van Zandt and Lovett could both find a spot in the class, but Lovett seems to be a tough recruiting battle with several SEC and ACC schools.WR - Tariq Woolen (UTSA)WR - Charleston Rambo (OKLAHOMA)WR - KD Nixon (COLORADO)WR - Gavin Holmes WR - Trestan EbnerWR - Omar Manning Notes: Rambo is the longshot, but he is visiting which gives a glimmer of hope. The rest appear headed to Baylor.TE - Brandon Thompson (Also DE)TE - Louis Dorsey Notes: Thompson appears to be headed to Baylor and Dorsey could shut it down if he comes in this weekend.OL - Jason Moore OL - Henry Klinge OL - Xavier Newman OL - Eleasah Anderson OL - Brenden Jaimes (NEBRASKA) or Stephan Zabie or George Moore OL - Gray Davis Notes: It is difficult to find six offensive linemen for this class and the addition of Jaimes, Moore, and Zabie could include Huhn, Bardwell, and Cosmi.DL - James Lynch (COMMITTED TO BAYLOR)DL - Justin Harris DL - Chidi Ogbonnaya DL - Morris Joseph DL - Brandon Thompson (Also TE)Notes: I see Chidi flipping to Baylor when he visits. I also believe the Bears land Harris and Morris if he is offered. LB - Terrel Bernard (HOUSTON)LB - Amaud Willis-Dalton Notes: Baylor sits in a good position for Bernard. Willis-Dalton will be a fight, but the staff is putting in work on him.DB - Timarcus Davis (COMMITTED TO BAYLOR)DB - Harrison Hand (COMMITTED TO BAYLOR)DB - Trevon Lewis (COMMITTED TO BAYLOR)DB - Myles Jones DB - Kamren Curl Notes: This position is essentially full, but a special talent like Curl would be taken. Myles Jones is a longshot, but he'd be taken up until the ink is dry.

I spent a few hours at DI Sports today and got some intel on several players that were not there. Several people in the know were there and here are some notes.Gavin Holmes - From the sound of everyone there, Baylor will land him.KD Nixon - It was also thought Baylor is going to land him as well.Xavier Newman - Several didn't understand why he decommitted, then deleted the tweet, but they all said they see him coming to Baylor as well.Grant Polley - Looks like Texas is the team to beat.Rafiti Ghirmai - "I saw the Baylor coaches followed me, but I haven't heard from any of them yet."
