Bears Get Road Win 29-20 at Texas State

SAN MARCOS, Texas — A rugged night of football on the San Marcos River comes to a close with Baylor (1-0) taking a sloppy victory over Texas State (0-1) by a final of 29-20.

Let’s get this out of the way — ESPN+ should have paid ME to watch whatever that was. I’m still too young for adult beverages, but I can now imagine the motion sickness that comes with extreme inebriation through tonight’s quivery camera feed. And the damn Applebee’s commercial made it all the more insufferable.

As for the ballgame, a monstrous Baylor win behind the legs of Gerry Bohanon and Trestan Ebner that many expected did not find its way to San Marcos. The Bears struggled immensely on offense in the first half, and the second half wasn’t much more exciting.

On the other side of the ball, though, the defensive unit led by Jalen Pitre was gritty. With stagnation on offense, the Bear defense stepped up with seven points of their own while forcing three turnovers and holding Texas State to a 4-14 mark on third-down.

Recapping the first half, a JT Woods interception was the only major highlight for Baylor — although I wish I would’ve been able to see it. I’m genuinely hoping the camera person enjoyed their first football game, but I digress. The Woods score and an Abram Smith touchdown were the two plays that gave Baylor a 14-10 lead at the break.

The second half was a bit better on offense, but the defense was the anchor via picks from Pitre and Jairon McVea. Ebner and Smtih certainly looked smoother, but there was no consistent explosiveness. With the two-headed backfield climbing above 100 yards apiece and the defense holding just enough, Baylor closed out the 29-20 win.

The score was 29-20. The larger of those two numbers belongs to Baylor, and that puts the good guys in the win column. On a weekend where just about every favorite in the nation struggled, the Bears held on to steal a game on the road. And next week will even get slightly easier on the Brazos.

Drake brother. Did you watch the game? The offense didn't "stagnate" in the first half we just couldn't punch it home. We only punted once or twice all game and as I recall both in second half. It was an unusual game because both teams kept the ball so long? Steal a win? That game was not nearly as close as the score because of the style of game and the points we left on the board. At no point did Texas state have any realistic chance of winning.

He did say he watched the ****ty stream which partly explains his altered view. Although I suspect he did partake in the adult beverages to describe the game that way.

Ya I'll give you that. Between the broadcast and the crazy low number of projections it was a very bizarre game. Fans need to think about per possession productivity to get a more accurate view of this game. There were a ton of positives. We basically let Texas state score at end because they had no time but that game was over. Abram Smith will never fumble again his whole life but that was his most action since Abilene high before tearing his acl and it will justvmaje him Madder in the end. Gerry is a grown ass man and. We didn't even need him to run which he could have done any time he wanted to.

Personally, I think he was spot on. Name one good hole that the offensive line made for our running backs? We are a Big 12 Power Five school and our offensive line STILL can't make an opening for our backs. Our backs had to make their own holes. There were times tonight that Bohanan could have put the ball under his arms and taken off, but wouldn't take off. More running would have kept the linebackers from shooting the gaps so much. The absolute stink of the night were some of the stupid penalties a good defense shouldn't be getting. Lack of discipline will kill you.

Name a hole? How about the one where abram took it 36 yards and ebner would have taken it to the house? We dominated the line of scrimmage even though they played the run. And this was the first game of a brand new offense and quarterback? I think we had one drive end on punt before the game was over? I'm not sure if y'all watch college football or just play video games. Clemson scored 3 points tonight and have all future nfl guys. What in the world were you expecting? They did exactly what they wanted to do except one untimely fumble a missed field goal, barely missing a couple deep throws. We dominated that game and Texas state has some players. That was not northwestern state.

Less we not also forget the TD catch that wasn't even reviewed. Pictures people took of the play from their tv clearly showed our receivers foot was down well inside the line. That plus a missed field goal and the fumble would put us at 39. Take away the garbage td SWT got near the end and the score looks better.

The 3 yards and a cloud of dust group are ecstatic this morning. For me, I would rather watch paint dry. So glad that in the past I was able to watch some of the most exciting offense in college football history.

My brother and I were in section 204 at the game. Texas State fans were warm and friendly. Unfortunately there was one guy who started out by getting a little inebriated, and then he decides that he is going to call all the plays from the stands. He was slapping his arms and making hand signals. I suppose we could have had him committed, but instead, we just moved to the upper deck of the end zone, where you could see what looked to me like some pretty good blocking schemes. Ebner would just cut back, off the block of his tackle, and go for 5 yards, without getting touched.
