Faith in Tyquan Thornton turned into a quick return for Baylor

It took one week for the Baylor coaching staff to convince elite speedster Tyquan Thornton that Baylor was the place for him. Thornton, who has never set foot on Baylor’s campus, made his verbal pledge to the Bears on Wednesday.

His doing so was a vote of confidence in the vision set forth for him by defensive backs coach Francis Brown. In their discussions leading up to Baylor eventually extending an offer, Thornton and Brown spoke at length about Baylor’s plan to mold him and develop him on the football field and off of it.

Brown spoke glowingly of his fellow coaches, and that seemed to strike a chord with Thornton.

“Baylor is the best fit for me," Thornton said while explaining his decision to commit so quickly after receiving an offer and despite not yet seeing Baylor in person. "I feel that they can build me into a better ball player, as well as a better man. They have a lot in store for me."

An elite track athlete, Thornton has garnered much more collegiate attention for his abilities as a runner. In fact, Appalachian State is currently the only program aside from Baylor that has extended a football scholarship offer.

For Thornton, the fact that the Baylor football coaches believe in him as a ball player and a track athlete has weighed heavily in their favor.

“It means a lot that they believe in me as a football guy,” he acknowledged. “I will play ball and continue my track career, and I will produce in both sports.”

At 6-foot-3 and a slight 165 pounds, Thornton cites his “strength” as an area for improvement in the coming months and years, but he says his frame has not been detrimental to his on-field play.

“I’m that guy. I make plays when the ball comes my way, and I win my one-on-ones,” he said confidently on Wednesday evening.

In the weeks and months ahead, it is unlikely that Thornton will continue to fly under the radar. Inevitably, other programs will take notice of the 2018 prospect now that he has made his commitment to Baylor.

Thornton says he is not formally planning to shut his recruitment down, but that he is “riding with Baylor.”
