From defensive end to safety: DeMarvion Overshown showing versatility, pop

The first play on DeMarvion Overshown's highlight tape from the 2016 season tells all you need to know.

"I'm physical," he said, "and I can cover a lot of ground."

The play shows Overshown, a standout at Arp High school delivering a punishing hit on a receiver. And if you continue to view the highlights, you'll notice him making plays on both sides of the ball, showcasing his ability to fly to the ball and make the jarring hit as a safety, or make an outstanding catch as a jumbo receiver.

At 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds, Overshown -- a big man on campus, literally and figuratively, at tiny Arp, which has roughly 250 students -- has done more than enough to show he is an FBS-caliber athlete, particularly at the safety spot.

As a junior, he, according to East Texas Sports Network, accounted for 173 tackles and three interceptions on a team he helped advance to the Class 3A Division II state semifinals this past season. What makes those eye-popping numbers even more impressive is the fact that he's still learning the position.

"[Last year] was my first playing safety. I started out as an outside linebacker," Overshown said. "The middle of my sophomore year, I played defensive end."

While he's still learning the safety spot, he's experienced as a defender, which he said has helped in his transition in the secondary. Offensive skill position players are seeing the disadvantage with every play, as Overshown is a freight train in the secondary, using his speed and power to attempt to turn every play into his own highlight reel.

In short, Overshown loves to hit, and he believes part of that is because of his childhood. Unlike many of his peers, Overshown never had the chance to first play flag football.

"I started playing at 6, and I played with 8- and 9-year-olds," he said. "Since I played up with the older kids, I didn't learn anything about flag. I just learned how to hit. I think playing tackle [football] so young made me want to get better at it."

Fast forward more than a decade later, and Overshown is one of the most coveted recruits in Texas. He claims 28 offers, the latest coming from Florida. He added Baylor in February and would be a keystone defensive pledge for Matt Rhule and his staff.

What may help the Bears is that Overshown is the younger cousin of defensive end Tyrone Hunt. Overshown said he has leaned on his cousin for advice, and Baylor is a school he's strongly considering. Overshown added that his recruiting process is far from over, and he wants to weigh all options.

Overshown recently has visited Texas and Texas A&M, and he said he's hoping to visit Baylor and TCU soon. Academically, he has an interest in architecture.

"I'm just going to ride it all out," he said of his recruitment. "I want to have cool people to be around and people who I can relate with. I want to be around people I can have fun with and, at the same time, win and compete with. I also want to get a good education. That's important."
