Coach Nicki Collen and staff received their first commitment to the 2022 Class in Kyla Abraham (WBB)‍. SicEm365 reached out to the Assistant Director of the Miami Suns, Mike Diaz, to talk about his star athlete and her development.

SicEm365: Mike, thanks for taking my call and to discuss Kyla Abraham’s game, her decision, and about her as a person, off the court.

Mike Diaz: Her offensive game is a little raw, but her getting on the (AAU) circuit showed she could play and she went from unranked to top 75 after the summer. She was playing in Pensacola at Choctaw and we reached to her coach about a post player. She didn’t know us and she missed the first tournament, but came in for Boo Williams and then her recruiting took off. Kyla could have passed on the Boo Williams tournament, but she was dedicated to getting her game better and really stepped up as a leader on the court. She played against a player headed to UConn and had, I think 5 or 6 blocks and ESPN followed her the rest of the tournament.

SE365: You feel her best is still ahead of her? Some have compared her to for Miami Suns and Baylor post Beatrice Mompremier in size and game. I think her athleticism is a bit ahead and she has a higher ceiling, which is saying something concerning Beatrice’s contributions to both Baylor and Miami.

MD: I can see that and in this system she will be allowed freedom to use her athleticism. She is going to continue to develop.

SE365: We’ve seen current player, Queen Egbo, starting to shoot threes on the break, using her athleticism. Not be buried on the block with her back to the bucket. Is that how you see Kyla thriving”

MD: Anytime you have a coach from the WNBA coming into a historic program you know they are going to develop and allow freedom on the offensive end.

SE365: Who were her lead recruiters?

MD: Tari Cummings reached out through my assistants and then went to Kyla after that. Chloe (Pavlich) as well. She has such a platform that all the kids know her and it was a great hire for Baylor.

SE365: What were some things that went into her choosing Baylor besides what we talked about before?

MD: Support from the fans and administration was a deciding factor. I showed her your site and all the people talking about her and she was thrilled. Baylor supports Women’s basketball and it shows everywhere in facilities and fans.

SE365: Tell us a little about Kyla before we interview her.

MD: She lived in San Antonio and still has family there. She just moved to Virginia and has adjusted well.

SE365: Mike, thank you for the call and we look forward to interviewing Kyla later.
