'6 Pack of Bear': Baylor OL commit opens up
Of Baylor's five commitments in the 2018 class, three are offensive linemen. That's good news for whoever will run the offense as the quarterback of the future.
Casey Phillips is hoping he will be one of the linemen on the field early -- and often -- in his college career. The 6-foot-6, 275-pound tackle from Franklin, Texas, has a lot to prove but is fired up about the opportunity to show his worth wearing green and gold.
Phillips chose Baylor over offers from TCU, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State and other schools. YOU COMMITTED ON MARCH 18. WHEN DID YOU FIRST KNOW BAYLOR WAS FOR YOU?
"Probably after my second visit to Baylor. I went to the junior day, and I hung around the coaches the whole day. I talked to Coach [Matt] Rhule one-on-one. I wanted to get back just to see the coaches and the campus without 45 or 50 kids there, so I went back that following Monday and watched the workouts. I think that's when I was sold the most."
WHICH COACH WAS MOST INFLUENTIAL IN YOUR DECISION?
"That's a hard question, because they all were. They were all recruiting me. Every time I went up there, they all knew who I was, and they made me feel welcomed."
YOU HAD YOUR OPTIONS. WHY BAYLOR?
"I think that Baylor is the school that fits me the most. I think that's where I can succeed the most, academically and athletically."
TALK ABOUT MATT RHULE. WHAT MAKES HIM SO INTRIGUING?
"I've seen some schools where the head coach isn't all that involved. Coach Rhule is involved -- a lot. He cares about the man you become after football. When you're on a campus, some head coaches are just like 'nice to meet you.' He really makes you feel welcome. I feel as close to him as I feel with some of the other guys still recruiting me."
FOR THOSE RECRUITS CONSIDERING BAYLOR, WHAT WOULD YOU TELL THEM?
"Baylor is going to turn things around. We're going to be a part of something great."
WHAT SHOULD FANS EXPECT FROM CASEY PHILLIPS?
"Someone who really fires off the ball and plays hard. I want to show everyone that I'm someone who works hard."
