Baylor Baseball Trio Named to Shriners All-Tournament Team
HOUSTON – Baylor baseball’s Kyle Nevin, Jack Pineda and Tyler Thomas have been named to the 2022 Shriners Children’s College Classic All-Tournament Team, as announced Tuesday by the Houston Astros.
Thomas also was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
The fifth-year senior LHP was brilliant in BU’s 2-1 win over No. 23 UCLA on Friday, tossing 8.2 innings with a career-high 10 strikeouts. He faced the minimum through seven innings and didn’t allow a second hit until the eighth. No UCLA batter advanced past first base until a one-out solo home run in the ninth.
Prior to the home run, Thomas extended his scoreless innings streak to 19.2 innings. He exited the game just one out shy of a complete game, having allowed just four hits and zero walks. The Keller, Texas, native also picked up Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honors for his dazzling performance.
Thomas becomes the fifth Baylor player all-time to be named the Most Outstanding Player of the Shriners Children’s College Classic, joining Cal Towey (2013), Michael Griffin (2003), Tim Hartshorn (2002) and Kelly Shoppach (2001).
Nevin was named to the All-Tournament Team as one of three outfielders after going 4-for-10 with a home run, six RBIs, one stolen base and one run scored. His two-run blast was the difference maker in Friday’s win over UCLA. He also drove in three runs in Sunday’s victory over No. 7 LSU.
Pineda was named the tournament’s top shortstop thanks to a 4-for-12 weekend, including five runs scored and two extra-base hits, a double and a home run. He drove in two on the go-ahead long ball against the Tigers and also set a career-high with three stolen bases on Saturday against No. 17 Tennessee.
Baylor tied for the weekend’s best record at 2-1, though the Bruins were named Tournament Champions with a tiebreaking plus-15 run differential. Minute Maid Park hosted a total attendance of 53,879, a tournament record. Saturday’s crowd of 24,787 marked the second-largest single-day attendance in tournament history and ranks as the seventh-largest attendance figure for a single-day baseball event in NCAA regular-season history.
