DALLAS – Baylor baseball (16-12) saw its five-game win streak come to an end on Tuesday at No. 24 Dallas Baptist (18-10) by a final of 11-6 at Horner Ballpark in Dallas.

The Bears nearly erased a seven-run deficit, but were ultimately unable to overcome the Patriots. Jared McKenzie drove in four runs for the Bears to tie his career-high and Brett Garcia turned in 3.2 perfect innings of work on the mound.

DBU got on the board first with an RBI double in the bottom of the second inning, then plated six runs in the third to take a 7-0 lead through the first three frames. Garcia came on to get the final two outs, and that’s when Baylor started chipping away at the deficit.

After a scoreless fourth, McKenzie’s bases-clearing double in the top of the fifth got the Bears on the board, cutting the DBU lead to 7-3. In the sixth, Esteban Cardoza-Oquendo singled in a run to make it 7-4, then BU added another pair of runs in the seventh to pull within one. McKenzie scored one of the tallies with a sacrifice fly before Kyle Nevin drove in another with an RBI single.

However, that’s all the Bears would get as the Patriots responded with a four-run frame in the bottom of the seventh and kept Baylor in check the rest of the way.

On the offense and Brett Garcia’s performance…

Baylor Athletics
Brett Garcia went 3.2 IP with 0 ER and 0 H

“Brett [Garcia] did a great job for us. We gave up a big third inning, but he came in and did a great job of holding them down for a couple innings and allowed our offense to get going. We got within a run, but couldn’t hold them. The offense did a great job of not forcing at-bats. They took what they were given, which is a sign of really good discipline. They did a really good job of finding good pitches to hit and getting on-base. We got within a swing of really get back in that ballgame and causing some chaos towards the end.”

WHAT'S NEXT
Baylor (16-12, 2-4) heads to Morgantown, W.Va., for a three-game series at West Virginia (16-10, 2-1). Friday’s series opener is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. CT.
