Baylor Picks Up Midweek Win Over Lamar, 5-1
WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball (19-17, 4-8) picked up a midweek win over Lamar (22-14) on Monday night at Baylor Ballpark.
Jack Pineda’s torrid streak at the plate continued early on Monday evening. He started the game with a leadoff triple off the left-field wall. The triple was Pineda’s fifth extra-base hit in his last three games and second triple over that stretch. Tre Richardson hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Pineda, and Baylor had the 1-0 lead after the first inning.
Cam Caley started on the mound and gave the Bears two scoreless innings.
In the third, Kyle Nevin showed why he was Big 12 player of the week by crushing a hanging breaking ball over the left-field fence. Nevin is really starting to find his groove at the plate, which is a great sign for this team.
After two months of little to no pop in this lineup. This Baylor team has hit six home runs in the past four games
Still in the third inning, Esteban Cardoza-Oquendo added an RBI single to give the Bears the 3-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Travis Hester allowed two walks and a single to load the bases. Coach Rodriguez pulled Hester in favor of Hambleton Oliver. Oliver escaped the inning after an incredible throw from Jacob Schoenvogel (who got the start in LF) to force a play at the plate. Cortlan Castle layed down a tag to prevent the Cardinals from getting on the board.
Both teams added a run in the sixth, giving Baylor a 4-1 lead.
Chandler Freeman made things interesting in the eighth. He had runners on first and second with one out but was able to escape the inning. He got former Bear, Kyle Harper, to pop up and then got a huge strikeout to end the inning.
In the bottom of the inning, the offense tallied an insurance run to give Baylor the 5-1 lead.
Adam Muirhead entered in the ninth and took care of business to give the Bears their third straight win.
Baylor was out-hit by Lamar, eight to seven. However, the bullpen stepped up tonight and never left the game in doubt.
