'6 Pack of Bear': Josh Fleeks excited about the future

The UIL Track & Field State Meet runs through Saturday, and several athletes -- including five Baylor commits -- will be competing for a gold medal on the campus of the University of Texas. One of those athletes is one of Baylor's first pledges of the 2018 class.

Cedar Hill High School athlete Josh Fleeks is hoping to add state gold around his neck before donning green and gold at the college level. The Bears' second commit of the 2018 class (he committed on the same day but shortly after the first commit, offensive tackle Jackson Kimble) is expected to use his track speed as an all-purpose threat in the Big 12, someone who can play both running back and wide receiver.

The 6-foot, 175-pound speedster is a member of Cedar Hill's 4x100-meter relay team. He's ready to compete Saturday -- and he's also ready to be a leader for Baylor's budding recruiting class. Fleeks is the latest subject of "6 Pack of Bear."

IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS, YOU'VE WATCHED BAYLOR'S 2018 CLASS GO FROM FIVE TO 12 COMMITS. AS ONE OF THE FIRST PLEDGES, WHAT WAS IT LIKE SEEING IT HAPPEN?
"Man ... I liked it. I think it's good that we've got so many fast guys committed. We're going to have a fast class. That'll be big."

IT SEEMS LIKE THINGS ARE JUST STARTING WITH BAYLOR RECRUITING. HOW DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE?
"I think the future looks great. I think we can be the class that can really bring Baylor back. I think our class can seal the deal for other big classes."

YOU ARE COMPETING AT THE STATE TRACK MEET. ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT THE WEEKEND?
"Yeah, I am. This is the first time any of our 4x1's going to state, so we're excited about it. A lot of people are asking about it. A lot of people are asking me about Baylor, too."

SPEAKING OF BAYLOR, COACH RHULE IS GETTING HIS NAME OUT IN TEXAS. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS OF RHULE AND HIS STAFF?
"I feel like they're getting the right people to commit. I think they're doing a good job. They're showing what can really happen at Baylor."

COACH JOEY McGUIRE WAS ONCE YOUR HIGH SCHOOL COACH. WHAT KIND OF ADVICE HAS HE GIVEN YOU TO HELP WITH YOUR GAME AND EVERYTHING ELSE?
"He's been telling just to keep calm when things don't go my way. I'm one of the leaders on my team, so he says to just stay encouraged."

YOU'RE ORIGINALLY FROM WICHITA FALLS. I'M ALSO FROM WICHITA FALLS. ARE THERE ANY ATHLETES FROM THE CITY YOU PAY ATTENTION TO?
"Yeah, [Texas Tech's] T.J. Vasher and [Ohio State's] J.T. Barrett. With J.T., it's the way he plays and how he thinks. I don't know how to really explain it. It's just how he is. With T.J., he is my cousin, and he's played a big role in my football career."
