Report: Baylor to Hire Mitch Thompson as Next Head Baseball Coach
Baylor will hire Mitch Thompson as its new head baseball coach. The news was first reported by Kendall Rogers on Wednesday morning. Thompson, 56, will return to the Baylor program, where he spent 18 years as an assistant coach under Steve Smith from 1995-to-2012.
After a decade of success at McLennan College and four Juco World Series appearances, one of those being a title in 2021, he will be replacing Steve Rodriguez. Rodriguez stepped down from the program on May 30th after a disappointing 26-28 season that failed to make the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season.
Thompson is coming to BU at a critical time. It’s no secret that Baylor Baseball has lost the juice and momentum surrounding the program and its fanbase. The school has been unable to keep up in the arms race for upgraded facilities, while attendance at Baylor Ballpark has been declining as well.
With the transfer portal and the constantly changing landscape that is college sports, Thompson and his new staff will have plenty of things they need to face head-on when they cross I-35 to get to Baylor’s campus
Thompson seemed to be too obvious of an answer. However, Mack Rhoades never let that sway his decision to go with the hometown favorite. The addition of Thompson to the helm of the program immediately brings a lot of attention and respect to an otherwise dormant program.
Thompson knows and loves Baylor. He knows how to win at Baylor, and I will believe he will do just that by the moment he steps on campus.
