74 Days till Kickoff: Corey Coleman's 74 reception season
As always, keep track of both the stats and roster countdowns in the Offseason Hub!
In a decade where incredible receivers routinely broke records in Waco, Corey Coleman had the third-best season of all time for a Baylor receiver in 2015. During that year, Coleman hauled in 74 receptions (6th most in BU history) for 1,636 yards and 20 touchdowns (BU record).
In yards, he only trailed Terrance Williams’ 2012 season in which Williams had 97 receptions for 1,832 yards, and Kendall Wright’s 2011 season, where Wright had 108 receptions for 1,663 yards.
Coleman, a Dallas native, led the NCAA with 20 receiving TDs and was third nationally with 113.6 receiving yards per game, which arguably would have been higher had Seth Russell and/or Jarrett Stidham avoided injury.
In the seven games where Russell was the starting quarterback, Coleman averaged 137 yards per game. When Jarrett Stidham was the starting quarterback for three games, Coleman averaged 115 yards. In the two games without either quarterback, Coleman averaged 29 yards per game. It’s crazy to think how high Corey’s numbers would have been had both Baylor QB’s not been injured. Granted, Coleman was hindered by some injuries down the stretch as well.
While Coleman had seven 100-yard games, four of those being in the Big 12, his most notable performances came against West Virginia and Kansas State. In a 62-38 blowout win over West Virginia (10/17), Coleman caught ten passes for 199 yards and three touchdowns. In the hard-fought 31-24 victory over Kansas State (11/5) in Manhattan, Coleman had eleven receptions for 216 yards and two touchdowns.
Coleman was named a unanimous All-American and earned the Bilentnifkoff Award for being the nation’s top receiver. He was the eighth unanimous All-American in school history and was also unanimous First-Team All-Big 12. He was even being mentioned in the Heisman race before injuring a hernia that forced him to sit out the bowl game against North Carolina.
After his record-setting 2015 season, Coleman was selected with the 15th overall pick in the NFL Draft by the Clevland Browns.
