53 Days till Kickoff: Baylor’s Offense was 53rd in the Nation in Yards per Game
As always, keep track of both the stats and roster countdowns in the Offseason Hub!
Baylor’s offense was 53rd in the nation in 2021, averaging just over 423.5 yards per game. The passing attack led by Gerry Bohannon averaged 203.1 yds/g, while the ground game on the backs of Abram Smith and Trestan Ebner averaged 219.3 yds/g.
In year one under Jeff Grimes, the Bears’ 423.5 yards per game was good for fifth in the Big 12 and 31st amongst P5 schools. In comparison, the Bears averaged 310.2 yds/g under Larry Fedora in 2020. It’s safe to say that the implementation of Jeff Grimes's wide zone scheme was a massive upgrade for BU.
While on his way to setting the single-season rushing record at Baylor, Abram Smith accounted for over 27% of the Bears' total yards (1,621/5,913) on the season with just his rushing numbers. Trestan Ebner, Smith’s backfield mate, contributed 799 rushing yards of his own. Gerry Bohannon led the charge under center with 2,200 passing yards and 323 rushing yards. While Tyquan Thorton was a menace out wide with 948 receiving yards on the season.
