13 Days till Kickoff: Baylor’s #13 Al Walcott
Al Walcott is a senior cornerback from Wilmington, North Carolina. He should have one year of Covid eligibility remaining if he elects to come back, and Baylor’s website has him listed at 6-foot-2, 219 pounds. This fall, Walcott will be replacing Jalen Pitre at the STAR position, which is a hybrid safety-linebacker position in Ron Roberts and Dave Aranda’s defense.
Our own Travis Roeder has been clamoring for Walcott to play STAR all off-season and believes he will make the transition seamlessly because of his playmaking abilities.
In 2021, Walcott played in twelve games and started the final eight games of the season at cornerback. He was tied for third in the Big 12 with three interceptions and seventh on the team with 30 tackles. He recorded interceptions in the games versus Oklahoma, Kansas State, and most famously, in the Sugar Bowl against Ole Miss. Walcott’s 96-yard pick-six was the second longest interception return in Baylor history while also breaking the record for the longest interception return in Sugar Bowl history.
As a sophomore in 2020, the North Carolina native played in eight games, mostly on special teams. He had one tackle against OU and two in the season finale against Oklahoma State.
Prior to Baylor, Walcott was a three-star JUCO recruit and played at Butler (Kansas) Community College and helped lead his team to a 10-3 record and a bowl win. He tallied 70 tackles, three interceptions, 3.0 TFLs, and 14 PBUs in his lone season in Kansas. Walcott was the No. 14 JUCO defensive back in the country and committed to Baylor over Auburn.
