IRVING, Texas – Baylor football freshman running back Richard Reese has been named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, as announced by the conference on Monday.

The rookie had a breakout performance in BU’s 42-7 win over Texas State on Saturday, rushing for 156 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries, all of which were career highs. It was Baylor’s first three-TD rushing effort since Abram Smith did so against BYU in 2021.

Reese helped lead the Bears to a 293-yard output on the ground against the Bobcats, their highest total of the 2022 season thus far. He also caught one pass out of the backfield for a 17-yard reception.

After three weeks of play, Reese is now tied for the Big 12 lead with five rushing touchdowns, in addition to ranking second in yards per carry (6.97) and fifth in total rushing yards (237). Among college football freshmen, he ranks second nationally in rushing TDs (five) and fourth in rushing yards (237).

Reese is just the third Bear all-time to be named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, joining JaMycal Hasty’s 2016 honor and Jalen Hurd’s most recent 2018 accolade. Baylor has now had a weekly conference award winner in 20 straight seasons, dating back to 2002.

Joining Reese as this week’s Big 12 honorees are Kansas’ Jalon Daniels (Offensive), Oklahoma State’s Trace Ford (Special Teams) and Texas’ Jahdae Barron (Defensive).
