Baylor falls to West Virginia, 43-40, remains winless in Morgantown

Morgantown, W.Va. – The Baylor Bears (3-3) remain winless at Milan Puskar Stadium, losing to the West Virginia Mountaineers (3-3) by a score of 43-40 on Thursday night.

Gavin Holmes had seven receptions for a career-high 210 yards.

West Virginia’s Casey Legg connected on a 22-yard field goal with 33 seconds remaining in the fourth to give Baylor their third loss of the season and second consecutive conference loss.

While both defenses struggled throughout the contest, Baylor’s offense gave them a chance to win, putting up 421 yards through the air and 152 on the ground. Gavin Holmes had his best game of the season, catching seven passes and a touchdown on a career-high 210 receiving yards.

A lack of execution, turnovers and poor tackling all were factors in the loss. Another major storyline was Blake Shapen having to leave the game midway through the third quarter after getting hit in the head on an attempted slide by a Mountaineer defender.

Redshirt freshman Kyron Drones entered in for Shapen and played valiantly up until the final minutes. Drones threw for 95 yards and a touchdown on 7-of-14 passing but threw a crucial interception with 3:17 remaining in the fourth quarter. 

However, the following play JT Daniels threw an interception directly into the hands of linebacker Dillon Doyle. After being unable to pick up a first down on offense, John Mayers connected on a 44-yard field goal to tie the game at 40 apiece with 1:40 remaining.

Qualan Jones fumbled with 9:01 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Three turnovers and a lack of execution hurt Baylor all night. In the second quarter, West Virginia returned a Shapen fumble 65-yards to the house. And in the fourth quarter, the Bears had an extra point blocked and returned for a defensive conversion.

Later in the fourth, a Qualan Jones fumble gave West Virginia the ball back with 9:01 remaining.

The Mountaineers capped off a 72-yard drive with a 34-yard rushing touchdown by Tony Mathis to regain the lead, 40-37, with 7:06 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Bears sit near the bottom of the league in takeaways. Sacks. Etc. full week off to prepare and this is what the defense brings. Gonna be a long year.

This is my concern, Dave won big last year.. zero doubt about it. But he did so with Rhules recruits.

No kidding. Time to move on. It ain't gonna get better this season. If you can't figure out how to tackle the man with the ball, cover a receiver or KICK THE BALL OUT OF THE END ZONE six games in, you're not going to.

Uh, we were 10-3 in 2015. But anyways ... That's the difference between Baylor and the so-called BlueBloods. We rebuild, they just reload. With recruiting as it is, we are only going to be good about every 3 years or so when we have an older roster. There are no 4- or 5-star players sitting on the bench that we can reload with. Look at schools like Minnesota and Iowa. Same thing: Second tier teams that are good every few years or so. Maybe NIL and transfer portal will level the playing field, but we need to participate, if we want to take advantage.

Sorry, with everything else that went south in 2015, it seemed like we fell off a cliff on the field as well.

Not to mention we were 10-2 and won the Big XII in 2013 as well.

If you look closely at last year's team you will find that 4 wins were decided by 7 points or less and a few of those came down to the wire (Iowa State, Tech, OSU). 2 of our 3 losses this year are all w/in 7 points. We just don't have the same kind of luck (and gamebreaking players) we had last year. Pretty much all of our games over the past two years have been, for the most part, extremely close games. We have also had a much harder road schedule this year than last. We will see what happens the rest of the year, but it's not like we were dominating everyone last year.
