'6 Pack of Bear': TE Ben Sims ready for Baylor's new chapter

"6 Pack of Bear" is a weekly question-and-answer segment with a Baylor commit, recruit, coach or player. Each subject will get six questions. You can only find this on SicEm365!

Since committing to Baylor on June 2, tight end Ben Sims has been relatively silent. Truth be told, the silence is exactly what the San Antonio Clark High School prospect wanted following his pledge to the Bears.

Sims chose Baylor over offers from the likes of Houston, SMU, Texas State, UTSA. As a 6-foot-5, 240-pound flex tight end -- and someone who has lined up in the slot and as an H-back, in addition to lining up on the line as a traditional tight end -- Sims is fascinated by the opportunities of the tight end in Baylor's new offense.

Sims caught 30 passes for 477 yards and two touchdowns during his junior season. He now is hoping to use his hands, football IQ and 4.68-second speed in the 40-yard dash to progress into a major catalyst for Baylor -- and a major offensive threat in the Big 12. Sims opened up in the latest "6 Pack of Bear."

IT'S BEEN THREE WEEKS SINCE YOU'VE COMMITTED. WHAT'S LIFE BEEN LIKE FOR YOU IN THAT SPAN?
"It's definitely been more relaxed. Now that recruiting's over, I'm able to focus on other things more. I chose Baylor for a specific reason; [tight ends] Coach [Joey] McGuire and I have been texting a lot, and I've been getting ready for the season. Everything's gotten a lot easier now. Recruiting is a fun process, but now, I'm glad it's over."

WHAT WAS IT ABOUT BAYLOR THAT WON YOU OVER?
"It was the environment, honestly. It's one of those things where when you know, you know. I just felt like Baylor was where I needed to be. There's no other place like it. It makes me feel like I'm at home. Everything about it is perfect. That's where I wanted to be."

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE POTENTIAL FOR TIGHT ENDS THERE?
"That actually played a role in my decision quite a bit. When I first started visiting, I talked to Coach McGuire, and he said they plan on using double tight end sets. Most schools don't do that. The usage of the tight end definitely was big. I want to be a part of an offense where I can contribute and be successful."

SPEAKING OF TWO TIGHT ENDS, BRALEN TAYLOR ALSO IS COMMITTED. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT HIM AS A FUTURE TEAMMATE AND ANOTHER FLEX OPTION?
"Personally, I can't wait to team up with him. I've been to few camps where I've spoken to him. We text, too. We're pretty good guys, I like to think. I know we'll be hard to stop. As tall as he is, and as big as I am, I think it's really going to work out."

YOU LOOK AT BAYLOR NOW AND WHERE BAYLOR WAS ABOUT THIS TIME LAST YEAR. TALK ABOUT THE PROGRAM'S DIRECTION.
"Personally, I love what's going on. Every time we get a new commit or something good happens, it's rewarding. The coaches are excited, the players are excited ... I know we're going to be good. I'm just speechless about it."

AS YOU PREPARE FOR YOUR SENIOR YEAR, HOW DO YOU WANT YOUR FANS TO REMEMBER YOU?
"I'd like people to remember me as a tight end who could do it all. I get put in those positions where I want to be successful in every spot they put me. I want to be able to do it all at the tight end position."
