Quotes of the Week

Junior Defensive Lineman Apu Ika

"I feel like, we just got to play faster, get back to playing green, playing like us. I feel like during practice — when the lights aren't on and pressure isn't built — it's easy to play fast and say this and that. But we just got to do it when the lights turn on.”

Senior Tight End Ben Sims

“It goes back to doing simple better, being more intentional in our practices. Like taking everything seriously, because the things that you do in practice show up in the game. So like really going back and looking at you know, practice tape, it turns out that you do the exact same thing in the game. So, just the intentionality of what we're doing every day.”

Head Coach Dave Aranda

"I think we've probably had some games this year, unfortunately — and none of us ever talked this way — where I think we showed up thinking we're just gonna win this game. You know, here we are, where's the championship belt? And that was something that's never been a core belief or a core anything with anything we do," Aranda openly shared on Monday.

Analysis of the Week

SicEm365 Analyst Travis Roeder

The biggest area Kansas beats you is with chunk plays in the throw game. They are secondnationally in Expected Points Added (EPA) per throw. You don’t need to be a statistics savant to intuit what that probably means.

The briefest summary possible of EPA: It’s a context-considered estimate of how many points the offense added [expected] per play. A 45-yard pass on 1st & 10 from your own 25 is worth somewhere around 4 points. A 6-yard pass on 3rd & 4 from your own 25 is going to be worth positive points, but a 6-yard pass on 3rd & 10 from your own 25 is going to be negative. That’s how the context comes into play.

So, Kansas is second nationally in EPA per throw. That means they’re hitting a ton of big plays at a very efficient rate. EPA can sometimes be misleading (especially with option teams, they rarely throw and when they do they usually go for big plays) but Kansas is throwing the ball quite a bit and is still hitting a bunch of huge plays. Of course, most of this was still with Jalon Daniels at the helm, but Bean has shown that he’s more than adequate at launching the ball downfield.

Still a lot of issues in this game. But when it got dicey, they pounded the rock. Offense's head was hanging and they dug down and iced the game. Gotta appreciate that.

Can't afford 3 turnovers in Lubbock. Blake has got to get that straightened out. Not often you can be that careless and still get a W.
I have to wonder about cobwebs from the WVU concussion. But yeah -- we can't afford 3 TOs in any game we have remaining

This is silly.

This team will be in every game it plays the rest of the way. It just needs to stop finding creative ways to lose games.

It's not silly. We will be three points or more underdogs in every game going forward

This is true
I'll extend you the same offer. What do you want to bet it's not?

If we are right, you have to take a brick and bash yourself in the testicles until you crap out blood. If I'm wrong, I'll give you $20 and an autographed copy of my new book entitled "I'm usually right, don't bet against me"

Fun game. Coaches called a good game. Players played well. Team showed their metal by driving down and putting the game away.

Surprised so many didnt enjoy it.

You sound like someone that said "that's alright" after every little league strike out

Most everything you just posted is wrong and most no one would agree with you.

Maybe higher ceiling the next 3 years?

Dunno. Better passer for sure. But so far, not what I expected

Tech - id be surprised if not at least -3

Oklahoma - tough call but would be surprised if they not at least -3 assuming their food qb plays

Kansas state - ehhh. Depends next 2 weeks

Tcu - nope

Texas - nope

So I'd say maybe 1 game where we're not 3 point dogs. Let's see who's right. Will be fun

I'm thinking the rest of the way whatever we win will likely be because we outscored whomever in a shootout. And with this team's ability to make mistakes at critical times, it's hard to see that being very many wins. Bowl eligibility may well be a challenge as we still have to go to Lubbock, Norman, and Austin - plus we usually play TCU as bad or worse in Waco.

People dogging on Shapen are being a little critical. Shapen routinely makes passes that Bohannon generally could not. I also counted four or five drops that should have been fairly easy catches. this group of receivers just isn't that good (some do have talent but lack experience ie Nabors, Presley, Winfield), and Ben Sims is an above average tight end but he's no Jason Witten like some make him out to be

That's not to say I think shapen is irreplaceable. Both Drones and Novosad have much higher ceilings

I could count a number of balls that where off target where the receiver had to adjust that shapen threw I can only recall 1 significant drop by Gipson I had to listen to half the game on radio and got to watch the rest on TV

If you had to listen to half the game on the radio, you're just going to have to take my word for it. There were at least four drops, and at least one of them was an easy touchdown (I consider a drop when a receiver can get two hands on the ball)

Shapen is a microcosm of our offense/team as a whole. He's excellent in a clean pocket but struggles mightily under pressure. He'll do something awesome one minute to show you how good he can be and then make a silly ill-timed mistake to show you how far he still has to come.

He'll likely be an excellent Big 12 quarterback at some point. And he definitely adds an explosiveness to our offense we didn't have with Gerry. But he's way more mercurial, and the mistakes he does make tend to be giant, momentum-changing ones.

A good team needs a steady quarterback. Shapen has all the tools, but he needs to work on his pocket presence/awareness and get better under pressure, so he can be the reliable leader this offense needs.

It's indisputable that Shapens accuracy and arm strength are superior to Gerry's

Does that make him a better qb and the right choice for #1? Dunno. Gerry was more experienced. We lost that.

I would add stop being loose with the football when running with it. We've had two 14 point swings the last two games because of it, with both resulting in huge momentum swings.

No kidding two games in a row Shapen drops the ball around the red zone and it is run back (today to about the 2 then aTD the the next play).

Short of one "sack" caused by sideline, did the defense EVER make one? I can only recall a couple of rushes at best. That is a big problem.

I think that was the only one, but Kansas doesn't really give up sacks. They had only allowed four all year coming into today.

How do you figure? BYU sucks again. This time to Liberty and WVU gets riddled by Tech.

We look slow on both sides of the lines. We look out of condition. I don't think Blake has recovered from his bashing last year.

We do not play smart or coach smart. Thinking of the QB's we will face going forward gives me little confidence we can somehow not be torched rushing three out of conditioned DL.

The mistakes we make are maddening.

The "linesman" on the press box side of the field was awful. Just awful. I would hope our AD pursues his performance with Big 12 authorities.
