Baylor takes down Texas Tech in dominating fashion, 45-17

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Baylor Bears (5-3, 3-2) rushed for 231 yards and four touchdowns in their 45-17 win over Texas Tech (4-4, 2-3) on Saturday night at Jones AT&T Stadium.

Shapen threw for 211 yards and a touchdown on 19-of-30 passing.

Freshman running back Richard Reese had his second-consecutive 100-yard game, rushing for 148 yards and three touchdowns on 38 carries. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Blake Shapen threw for 211 yards and a touchdown on 19-of-30 passing.

In Joey McGuire’s first game against Baylor since taking the Texas Tech head coaching job, the Bears’ defense was fantastic. Holding the Red Raiders to 308 total yards on offense while adding five interceptions and six sacks. Devin Lemear, Al Walcott, Mark Milton, Tevin Williams III and AJ McCarty each recorded an interception.

To start the game, John Mayers put Baylor on the board first, converting a 48-yard field goal to give BU the early 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

As the second quarter progressed, Reese wore down the Tech defense, rushing for 57 yards and two touchdowns. The Bears went into the half leading 17-3 and dominating time of possession, 22:21 to 7:39.

The Red Raiders fought back in the third quarter, cutting the game to 24-17 after Tech’s true freshman quarterback, Behren Morton, rushed for an 8-yard touchdown on fourth and goal.

Overall, Morton struggled on the evening, completing only 11-of-33 passes for 152 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions.

Baylor’s defense totaled five interceptions and six sacks on the night.

Baylor responded to the Tech score with a masterful 75-yard drive that was capped off with a 1-yard Reese touchdown, his third of the night. BU went up 31-17 with 12:46 remaining in the fourth quarter.

With 4:04 remaining in the game, Morton was benched in favor of senior quarterback Tyler Shough, who instantly threw a game-sealing pick-six to sophomore cornerback AJ McCarty.
