Baylor Soccer's Season Ended with 1-0 Loss to Oklahoma State
WACO, Texas — Baylor Soccer’s season ended last night with a 1-0 loss to the Oklahoma State Cowgirls. The Bears finished with a record of 4-11-2 and 2-7 in the Big 12.
A 66th-minute breakaway goal from Megan Haines was the winner for the Cowgirls, as Baylor could not answer.
With the BU loss and the Kansas Jayhawks winning last night, the Bears fell to ninth in the Big 12 and will miss the conference tournament for the fist time since 2010.
The first half was a more defensive affair with both teams combining for just seven shots and two corner kicks.
Ava Colberg and Kayley Ables made some key interventions on the back line for the Bears, while important action was taken By Lauren Traywick with a save in the 11th minute and a good cutting out of cross in the 16th minute.
In the 24th minute, as the Bears were trying to keep the ball in the OSU half, sophomore defender Kate Zimmerman went down with what appeared to be a bad knee injury. A sad way to end her first career start.
The best chances for a Baylor goal in the first half came courtesy of senior Elizabeth Kooiman.
In the 30th minute, Kooiman was attempting to receive a ball in the OSU box, but she was bowled over from behind. In my opinion, a 50/50 call for the ref that went against the Bears.
Then in the 37th minute, Kooiman got on the end of another cross into the box, but her volley was not very clean, and the looping shot harmlessly went off the crossbar with the keeper more than ready.
Lastly, in the 40th minute, Kooiman fed fellow senior Maddie Algya in the OSU box. Aglya’s shot was tipped just wide by the keeper, denying the Baylor best chance of perhaps the entire night.
Soon after that, the choppiness of the game came to the surface and BU players earned two yellow cards in rapid succession. Haven Terry was booked in the 41st minute and Ashley Merrill was booked in the 43rd.
After a scoreless half, the cards continued in the second frame with Gabby Mueller earning a yellow in the 47th minute.
However, the offenses also opened up, with the Bears sending in 13 shots and the Pokes taking nine themselves.
A goal felt imminent for either side about ten minutes into the half.
Ables sent a free kick off the top of the OSU crossbar in the 53rd.
In the 57th minute, the Cowgirls had a shot hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounce just in front of the goal line before offside was called on the follow up.
Ables had a header just off target in the 61st, and then the Pokes broke through in the 66th.
After that Blythe Obar picked up the fourth yellow card for the Bears in the 67th minute.
And the last good chances for the Bears came in the 84th and 87th minutes, with Obar sending a header wide and Algya sending a shot from distance over the goal.
With that, the Bears season ended, and all that was left was to honor the six seniors: Ables, Algya, Kooiman, Taylor Moon, Marissa Gray, and Alyssa Navarrete.
