The 1-3-1: No. 18 Baylor WBB vs Incarnate Word

November 10, 2022

After opening up the season with a dominant 88-50 victory over Lamar on Monday night, No. 18 Baylor (1-0) will return to the court tonight against in-state foe Incarnate Word (1-0). The Cardinals defeated Our Lady of the Lake University 63-56 in their season opener Monday night in the McDermott Center.

Here is the 1-3-1 on IWU.

One Player:

One area where Baylor looked vulnerable against Lamar on Monday night was in the paint. Lamar was able to hang with Baylor on the glass, where they finished the night with 32 rebounds against the Bears.

IWU will look to challenge Baylor in the paint with UTSA grad transfer Yuliyana Valcheva. During their season opener, Valcheva paved the way with a double-double that included 12 rebounds to go along with her 12 points. She was one of three players for IWU that finished the night in double figures, joining Destiny Terrell (16) and Aliyah Collins (15).

Three Nuggets:

●      Thursday’s meeting with Incarnate Word marks the first time in program history the two teams will face off against each other.

●      IWU is coming off a record-setting year that included being crowned Southland Conference Champions and completing in March Madness.

●      This game will mark the second of three straight against opponents from the state of Texas to start the season for Baylor.

One Concern:

The Bears have yet to take to the court with their entire roster available, and that appears to be the case once again tonight. Baylor was without the trio of Caitlin Bickle, Erika Porter and Dre’Una Edwards in their exhibition, then Jana Van Gytenbeek joined them to miss the opener against Lamar with a bruised shoulder.

During the first half against Lamar, Ja’Mee Asberry dove for a loose ball and went to the bench with an apparent arm injury. Asberry did return in the second half with a band around her elbow, but she will miss tonight’s game against IWU.

“I think we could have a couple of players back tonight, but Asberry will be out with the elbow,” said head coach Nicki Collen. “It’s almost like a get two back and lose one situation. We’ve just been so banged up and just had seven players suit up for practice yesterday.”

Conclusion:

Baylor must play disciplined basketball and avoid getting into foul trouble if they want to avoid getting upset. The talent favors the Bears, but they can’t afford mental mistakes with the lack of depth at the moment. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. tonight in the Ferrell Center and will be aired on ESPN+.

Im here. 35 minutes early to be exact. I learned this trick from dfwbill and scoutbear. Get here early so you can watch all the opposing players practice their dunking. There's approximately 150 people here plus the band and the team and the announcer who's announcing all kinds of important things to 10,260!empty seats. Stay tuned

We look very… not good. This offense is abysmal.

Any team with even the slightest of post presence is going to eat us alive. If we ever have to play South Carolina…

This team needs 5 more games before it tackles Maryland. IW is about the equivalent of Iowa States 3rd string

What's up with the crowd? Looks like there's like 350 in attendance. I get it's a WBB game on a Thursday against a weak opponent but Jeesh

I see we're still offensively challenged.

34% from the floor, including 0-8 for 3, is uncharacteristic for the women. Not sure the reason for the sluggish play in the 1st half.

Blackwell not in to start the second half with 3 fouls

Defensive energy and a 10-2 run is more like it.

WBB on the Thursday night before a Friday night MBB, which is on the night before a sold out night football game.

Plus, this game is horrible. I hope we aren't really this bad, even without Bickle and company.

I think Dre guarded Boston about as well as you could hope for.

Missing some experienced players tonight, but finally starting to look comfortable and playing good basketball.

That was pretty rough, esp the first half. Buggs is so long! She's a terrific rebounder and defender but offense was a little out of control. She will figure it out. Blackwell clearly best player and I love her fire. The Stanford transfer was awful. Passing is all-around pretty bad. It's still early with lots of new pieces. Would like to see Dre out there.

The team will grow from this. If I am not mistaken I think Sarah and Jaden were the only people from last year's team that got decent minutes. Like Coach said last year when we played Texas State and UTA early in the year we were like we are in for a long year but they buckled down and learned the system and were Big 12 champs. We do not have the leader of the team on the floor we don't have a significant post-presence with Edwards. Jamee was not playing and Jana and Erika haven't been playing in a while. It will work out but I think this team has started off a lot better than what it started off as last year and we still DO NOT HAVE HUGE PIECES. They will be okay.

I am not worried at all. This team is not at full strength to start the season. You also have a lot of youth that is getting some good minutes at the collegiate level that would have never seen the floor other than during warmups in the past.

I think you will see a completely different, and improved, team once Bickle in Edwards are able to hit the floor. Bickle brings 4 years of experience including a national championship and Four Big 12 rings that will be a huge lesson in leadership for our younger players, much like when Lauren Cox was a leader and mentor for Bickle, Smith, and Egbo.

We do not need to rush anybody back from injury at this time because it is a long season and what will matter most is Big 12 play.

Me too. I have a much better feeling about the team at this point of the season when compared to last year.
