Baylor Women Impress in Gulf Coast Showcase
After an impressive showing in the Gulf Coast Showcase, No. 21 Baylor (5-2) fell to No. 22 Michigan (7-0) 84-75 on Sunday night in the championship game. Despite the loss to the Wolverines, Baylor was able to learn a lot about itself over the course of the tournament.
The Path
While making their way to the championship game, Baylor had to knock off Saint Louis then No. 23 Villanova. The Bears had no problem putting the Billikens to rest 92-58, as they dominated on the glass with 47 rebounds — the second most in a game this season.
Baylor would then shift their focus to the Wildcats, in what would be their second opportunity against a ranked opponent this season (Maryland). Once again it was the Bears' ability to control the boards that helped secure a 75-70 victory. The Bears also had five different players register double-digit scoring, led by Caitlin Bickle (18) and Jaden Ownes (17).
Leading by Example
Jaden Owens showed what being a leader is all about, as she earned All-Tournament honors for her performance in the Gulf Coast Showcase. Owens has displayed her court vision and unselfishness all season long, but she left no doubt that when she needs to become a scorer—she can do that as well.
After dropping a career-high 17 points and matching her career-best five rebounds against Villanova, Ownes dropped 22 points in the title game against Michigan. Over the course of the tournament, Owens averaged 16.7 points and shot 60.6% from the floor.
Against Saint Louis, Owens posted her second point-assist double-double of the season. She also matched a career-high with five rebounds and fell a steal shy of tying a career-best, finishing with a team-high three.
