Roberts, also the inside linebackers coach, joined Dave Aranda at Baylor for 2020 following after two seasons as the Defensive Coordinator at Louisiana. Roberts’ 2021 Baylor defense led the Bears to a 12-win season and a Big 12 Championship, leading the conference in interceptions (19), turnovers gained (27), turnover margin (0.93) and defensive touchdowns (3).

Wheat spent a single season at Baylor after joining the program in the 2022 offseason. Wheat replaced Matt Powledge who left for Oregon as the co-Defensive Coordinator.  Wheat came to Waco to join Aranda’s staff after two seasons as a full-time assistant at the University of Nevada.

The moves are on the heels of Baylor’s 6-6 campaign in 2022, a season which the the Bears were picked to win the league by the media.

Can he bring a WR with him?

I hope we don't get DeFrozen out on this transfer prospect

Busch isn't impressive imo that would be a meh hire.

He's a great special-teams coordinator and defensive back coach. Considered a decent recruiter as well. Like I mentioned in the above post, I still think Aranda hires some sort of person already familiar with what he does that he trusts to just be his defensive assistant while he takes over play calling duties, and Busch would fit that plan

Hopefully, we have a Waco area HVAC company ready to step up with NIL

Can you accuse him of hiring bad coordinators/assistants?
Yes, you can. The first OC hire was a terrible one in every way (personality fit, scheme)

This one not sure what it was but either way not a good look. Getting mistakes corrected quickly is good so mixed sentiments. But as you alluded to.. the takeaway is not just wow what a great coach to fire guys once they show they aren't it.

That list is underwhelming to say the least

Agreed. Many were excited to hire Aranda after LSU's NC but it was the offense (Burrows) that won that NC not the defense.

And how many national championships might Baylor have (at least one) if Briles' offense had been paired with a defense that thought not giving up 30 or more points was a good night? It takes both, you can't do it with one alone now.

One thing I will mention with Roberts is that I don't think he was a huge asset in the recruiting game, and I know Aranda is trying to emphasize recruiting with his staff hires. I don't think you can roll Gary Anderson or Kevin Steele out there on the recruiting trail and expect much to happen
Do towel girls count as recruits?

Asking for a friend.

I think Aranda's gutsy 4th down calls have won more games for us than some of y'all want to give credit for. The guy is clearly a very decisive man which I appreciate.

Wrong Gary. Actually, I know no one wants to hear this, but Gary Patterson was well liked in the Texas high school football community and on paper he consistently out recruited Baylor. I don't think his team liked him that much but that's a different story

This shows why i think the NIL stuff will slow down for a lot of schools. This company spent money on a guy who is now transferring.... but how much return did they get on that investment using a college kid to advertise their company? I just can't imagine it was much.

So who is everyone hoping we hire ?

Phil Montgomery should get a look for sure.
For DC???

Or do you mean as OC even though we haven't fired ours?

His defense was ranked number eight that year in the FEI metrics. That's not a special defense by LSU standards, but it's certainly good and far from a liability

Baylor wins a Natty in 2015 if Russell doesn't get hurt… nobody was slowing that team down. They would have rolled to a Title. That said it NEVER hurts to have at least a decent defense

You did say something to that effect on the thread you were fawning over Tech having a similar record to ours. I actually agreed with you that being around .500 isnt good for any coach not just a Baylor coach to be achieving. Anyway that why Aranda is taking the action he is taking. Hopefully Aranda does turn it around.

I wouldn't use the word "fawning". IIRC, he made the point that Joey had a very good record for a first year coach. I agree.

Hell, Ron won almost twice as many games as he lost as a head coach. Maybe he resigned.

This is true and the powers that he knew it. Recruiting was getting turbocharged. Then the "scandal" appeared

That year still makes me sick. After that West Virginia game at home I booked a hotel I. Phoenix. That's how sure I was also

When you are strange/enigmatic and you win a lot, everyone thinks you're a genius. When you don't win a lot, you might just be weird.

firing 9 coaches in three years does evidence some decisiveness, but it also means we are either hiring poorly or too quick on the trigger.

Strange.

That was the defining game for me as well. We showed we could make adjustments on offense to where nobody could stop us from scoring. Russell's legs changed that game.

Careful careful DD people hate facts. IMO neither the O or D was impressive. However, this notion that we had sone elite offense is hilarious. Our passing offense was laughable at times
PartyBear
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I haven't heard anyone say we have elite offense. We haven't truly had one since 15. I personally think Aranda should revamp a lot of things. Maybe he still will but what he did two weeks ago is a start.
IowaBear
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Elites not the right word but we definitely have a lot of fans who think this offense is a lot better than it truly was.
