IRVING, Texas – Baylor women’s basketball guard/forward Bella Fontleroy has been named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week, the league announced on Monday. The recognition marks the second awarded to Fontleroy this season.
Fontleroy became the 24th Bear to earn the distinction in program history, dating back to the 1996-97 season, and just the 12th to collect the recognition more than once. She is the first to repeat since Lauren Cox in 2016-17.
The Springfield, Missouri, native poured in a game- and team-high 17 points in Sunday’s 79-35 win over HCU, matching a career-high in the category. Fontleroy accounted for more than half of BU’s points scored off the bench in the 44-point victory, and she recorded her first-career double-double grabbing a career-high 11 rebounds.
For the week, Fontleroy led all freshmen in the Big 12 in scoring and rebounding, while turning in the highest field-goal percentage among rookies in the league. She went a team-best 3-for-6 from 3-point range, which was the second-best average in the Big 12 this week.
With her 17-point performance against the Huskies, the rookie has now reached double-figure scoring in four-straight games and six out of eight contests this season.
Fontleroy and the No. 19 Baylor Bears return to action Wednesday night when they host UT Arlington at 7 p.m. inside the Ferrell Center.
Single-game tickets are available for purchase and Wednesday’s contest will be the final opportunity to donate a new or gently used coat to our friends at South Waco Elementary.
