The 1-3-1: No. 19 Baylor vs UT Arlington

December 7, 2022

After drumming HCU 79-35 for their fourth consecutive in-state victory of the season, No. 19 Baylor (6-2) returns to the Ferrell Center on Wednesday night against UT Arlington (5-4). The Mavericks are currently riding a three-game winning streak, after defeating Lamar 60-56 on Sunday.

Here is the 1-3-1 for the Bears and UT Arlington.

One Curiosity:

Tonight’s game should provide another opportunity for the younger players on the roster to earn valuable in-game experience. Against HCU, it was the freshmen trio of Darianna Littlepage-Buggs, Bella Fontleroy and Kyla Abraham — along with sophomore Kendra Gillespie who stole the show.

Fontleroy was able to record her first career double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, which earned her Big 12 Freshman of the Week. Littlepage-Buggs registered a career-high four steals, while Abraham added a career-best six points and five boards in eight minutes on the floor. Gillespie recorded a career-high 10 points, marking the first time the sophomore has reached double-figure scoring.

It will be interesting to see if these young stars have another breakout performance, as well as Jana Van Gytenbeek, who was able to match her career high in assists (5) on Sunday as well.

Three Nuggets:

  • Baylor forced Houston Christian into 25 turnovers, a season-best for the Bears and the most since November 2021.
  • Baylor will be the third Big 12 opponent of the season for UTA, falling to Kansas (79-74) and Oklahoma (89-80).
  • Baylor has won 69 of the last 71 non-conference games at the Ferrell Center.

One Player:

Baylor must contain forward Starr Jacobs and not let her get into an early rhythm from the floor. The forward from Duncanville entered the season as the WAC Preseason Player of the Year, as well as the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Preseason Watch List.

Jacobs is currently averaging 15.9PPG, while accounting for 25 steals, 20 assists, and 49 rebounds through nine games this season.

Conclusion:

Baylor and UT Arlington are set to tip off tonight at 7:00 p.m. and the game will be available on ESPN +. The Bears will then get a breather before taking on Tennessee State next Thursday morning at 11:00 a.m. in the Ferrell Center.

The middle 5 minutes of the second quarter has been the best ball we've played all year.

This seemed like the perfect game for Abraham and Porter to get more than 9 and 5 minutes.

This is a much better win than I expected. This UTA team has beaten Houston, lost by 5 on the road at Kansas, and lost by 9 on the road at #16 Oklahoma. And, they scored 80 against OU. Holding them to 36 points was very impressive. Go Bears.

Yeah I hate that coach doesn't let them play more when we blow out these "weaker" opponents! But it's cool!

It has been my observation that Drew usually empties the bench only when there are very few minutes left in the game. Even when we have a big lead. I think that was also Mulkey's policy. It's probably pretty standard.

But with mulkey, In a blowout every bench player had over 10 minutes though. But it's cool. I get that coaches want to have the core players playing more since they'll be the ones getting all the minutes in the big games!

This is the best I can remember the ladies playing in the last 2 years. It was exciting to see everything working well.

Actually, I think I remember everyone wondering why Jaden Owens didn't get playing time in these games. There were also a few recruits that we wondered about why they were not playing in these types of games.

To be honest, did anyone really understand Mulkey's policies? I sure didn't.

I was surprised not to see Porter and Abraham until so late in the blowout. It strongly suggests to me that there is a significant gap between those two and the rest of our bigs right now. But also, I can understand why Coach Collen would want to have the other players on the court as much as possible. With all of the graduations and transfers, this is the most turnover in personnel between seasons that we have seen in a very long time. They need more time than typical to get chemistry and gel together. A few extra minutes on the court together is more valuable than the chance to get more reps in for our deep bench.

I also think we were trying the 2-3 zone with the starters so that it could be something we implement in the future.

If you go back to when we were very deep like 2016-17 season whenever there was a blowout all players had great playing times and the starters only played the first half. But yeah Jaden should've played more her first year with us.

I've been incredibly impressed with Jaden this year. But two years ago, she was getting called for a foul on almost every other defensive possession. She had a lot of potential (finally coming to fruition right now), but that's what I think kept her off the floor for us earlier.

Collen might do that at some point. This was the biggest margin of victory for her years at Baylor.
