CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 11 Baylor men’s tennis (3-1) dropped a 4-0 contest to No. 1 Virginia (4-0) on Sunday afternoon at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.

The loss marked the Bears’ first of the season and gave Virginia their first win against the Bears since the 2015 NCAA Semifinals.

Sunday’s play began with a win on doubles court two from Tadeas Paroulek and Zsombor Velcz. The pair only took 30 minutes to beat Virginia’s Iñaki Montes de la Torre and Ryan Goetz, 6-2.

Virginia regained leads on courts one and three to take the doubles point and the 1-0 lead in the match. Jeffrey von der Schulenburg and Alexander Kiefer beat Luc Koenig and Ethan Muza, 6-4, while Bar Botzer and Chris Rodesch defeated Finn Bass and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi, 7-6(6).

Singles play saw chances for the Bears on courts five and six, with Ethan Muza and Zsombor Velcz nearing possible match points and wins for BU, but Virginia clinched the match with three-straight singles wins first.

No. 23 Bass dropped his first singles match of the year to No. 27 Rodesch, 6-2, 6-2, while No. 45 Schulenburg defeated unranked Marko Miladinović, 6-3, 6-3, on court three.

The match was clinched at 4-0 with Goetz’s 7-5, 6-3 win over No. 115 Grassi Mazzuchi on four.

The Bears return home to host one of the ITA Kickoff Weekend campus sites, with matches against Arizona State on Friday, Jan. 27, and either San Diego or Florida State on Saturday, Jan. 28.
