The 1-3-1: Baylor (14-6, 5-3) vs Kansas (14-5, 4-4)
Baylor (14-6, 5-3) was able to take care of business on Saturday in Lubbock, as they defeated the Red Raiders 79-59 behind double-digit scoring from five different Bears. The focus now shifts towards the backend of Big 12 play starting with Kansas (14-5, 4-4) on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. in the Ferrell Center.
During their first meeting this season, Baylor dominated the Jayhawks 75-62 in Lawrence behind a 27-point performance by Sarah Andrews. As the rematch awaits, here is the 1-3-1 on the Bears and Kansas.
One Key:
When Baylor gets Jaden Ownes involved in the scoring they are a completely different team. Owens had been in a scoring slump for the past few games, but she put an end to that in Lubbock dropping 16 points on the Red Raiders.
During the first meeting with Kansas, Ownes tallied seven points, but she also turned the ball over four times. Expect another breakout performance from Ownes tonight in Ferrell Center, as her last double-digit scoring performance at home came in a 10-point outing against Oklahoma State back on January 11th.
Three Nuggets:
● Baylor holds the 38-8 advantage in the all-time series with Kansas and has won 18 straight meetings including the series opener in Lawrence on Jan. 7th.
● The Bears are 18-2 all-time in Waco against the Jayhawks and haven’t lost to KU at home since the 1999-00 campaign.
● Holly Kersgieter is KU’s leading scorer in Big 12 games, scoring 15.6 points per contest while ranking second on the team with 6.6 rebounds per game in league play.
One Player:
While Kersgieter is a scoring threat for Kansas, Baylor held her to just 11-points on 4-of-12 shooting the first time around. The biggest concern is going to be the battle in the paint against Taiyanna Jackson, who was a nightmare to Baylor in their first meeting.
Jackson leads the Big 12 in double-doubles this season with thirteen, including a 21 points and 12 rebound performance against K-State this past Sunday. She has been a force at both ends of the court this season and on Jan. 24, she was one of 15 players named to the 2023 Naismith Women’s Defensive Player of the Year Watch List.
