FORT WORTH, Texas — It was not pretty by any means, but Baylor (17-10, 8-7) was able to end their four-game skid as they knocked off TCU (7-19, 1-14) 67-57 on Wednesday night at the Schollmaier Arena. Five different Bears scored in double figures, led by freshman Bella Fontleroy with 14 points.

TCU made it clear from the jump that their game plan was to be aggressive in the paint and force the Baylor bigs into foul trouble — and it worked to perfection. By the time halftime rolled around, Caitlin Bickle (12pts) and Darianna Littlepage-Buggs (10pts) each had three fouls, while Fontleroy had a pair of her own.

Baylor was held scoreless for the final five minutes of the first quarter, despite holding a 12-8 lead with 4:28 remaining. TCU’s offense was humming early on, as they ended the first quarter with a 20-17 lead behind shooting 61.5% from the field.

The Bears turned their shooting woes around out of the break behind an 11-0 run in the second quarter that led to a 28-22 lead over the Frogs. Unfortunately, it wasn’t all good news in the second quarter as Bickle picked up her third foul 4:02 remaining before the half.

Baylor turned to their youth along the bench to help counter the foul troubles which as expected resulted in some mixed results. Catarina Ferreira took advantage of her opportunity with a clutch three-pointer followed up by a pair of steals, while Kyla Abraham grabbed one rebound and picked up a quick foul.

Neither player would score again on the night.

Baylor’s offense struggled to get any help from their guards during their last outing against Iowa State, but two of the three would bounce back against TCU. After starting the game off the bench, Sarah Andrews finished the night with 12 points, while Ja’Mee Asberry chipped in with 12 points of her own.

Turnovers also plagued Baylor on the night. TCU entered the game ranked second in the Big 12 in steals with 8.62 per game in conference play, and forced the Bears into 13 in the first half alone — 21 total. Despite their self-inflicted wounds, Fontleroy gave Baylor a 39-31 halftime lead on a shot from behind the arc in the closing seconds.

Bickle helped carry the momentum from Fontleroy’s bucket into the third quarter, as she scored the first five points for the Bears out of halftime. However, her night would end early once again as she fouled out. Baylor was able to put together a 9-0 run late in the third quarter to take their largest lead of the night 49-40.

Fontleroy dropped another shot from downtown with 3:06 remaining in the game to give Baylor the first double-digit lead by either team on the night 61-51. TCU wouldn’t go down without a fight, as they closed the gap to 63-57 behind a pair of three-pointers from Tomi Taiwo, but it would be enough to beat Baylor.

The Bears will be back in action on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. in the Ferrell as they play host to Texas Tech.
